Forgotten Passwords

Hi guys,

 

How does people handle forgotten passwords?

 

At the moment we have around 2-3 students a day coming up to us with forgotten passwords, which is annoying enough, but if I am not here they cant do that. Does anyone know of any way of giving staff BASIC ways of resetting passwords for students?

We don't get much of it here - when we do we reset their password to Password1 (which meets the complexity rules) and force change at logon.

 

At the first school I was at (Linux on the desktops), students could change their own passwords, but they had to follow the instructions on the intranet/wall posters and most couldn't be bothered to read them. I'd get loads coming in saying they had forgotten their password, as a way to get out of lesson. I soon solved that though...

 

Kiddo: I've forgotten my password sir.

Me: OK, I'll change it - Whats your favourite football team?

Kiddo: Man U (of course - How do you confuse a Man U fan? Show them a map of Manchester)

Me. OK, your password is WBArules. Follow the instructions on the wall if you don't like it.

 

A week or so later....

 

Kiddo: I've forgotten my password sir.

Me: It's WBArules - I changed it last week.

I agree, delegate control for staff to reset passwords for students as its one less job for you to do and also it stops students from coming out of the classroom

We have Impero installed on all our computers, the staff can use the reset password tool within Impero to change students passwords

Delegate control via AD with shortcut on teacher desktop is how I set it up here. Only ICT teaching staff are AD delegates and seems to work well. Easy to add or remove staff on an ad-hoc basis if required as it is linked to a security group.

 

They can't do anything except reset the password.

Were I work we have given ICT teachers access and permissions to change student passwords, this way they can change passwords, then the others need to e-mail us they are not allowed to send a student out from their lessons.

We had a huge problem with this at first school we worked at and the disruption to teaching it used to cause. Teaching staff had access to change passwords but none bothered. In the end we changed the passwords to a fixed password that only the student knew but the staff could work out. Problem fixed. Edited July 7, 2016 by Davit2005

You can do delegation on OU's I'm pretty sure :-).

Only if you put all your staff and students in the the same OU, you dont delegate the whole of AD to them, just the OU(s) you choose.

We delegated Staff control on students account and give them this tool

 

And we still get at least one a day coming to see us - I think they just like the chance to get out of a lesson!
