techy32 Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 One of our staff member is going on a long term leave and the person who is taking over would like to have his personal drive's access. What would be the best way to achieve this? Server: Windows Server 2012 r2 Client: windows 7
Lonix Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 For us we can just map another drive to that persons area. Manually do it on the machine when they are logged on or do it through Active Directory/Group Policy depending on your system setup.
techy32 Posted June 17, 2016 Author Posted June 17, 2016 @Lonix The personal drive has to be shared first to achieve it?
dry Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 If it's just one user, we've changed permission on user 1's area to allow user 2 access (read or read + write depending on management decision). Then either add a shortcut to user 1's area in user 2's area, or map a drive to user 1's area. I'm sure there's probably a few 'best practise' improvements to be made but we've done it very infrequently historically.
JATSO Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 Surely the person going on leave has a duty to leave all data accessible to the replacement that they might require by placing a copy of the data in a Staff area that is accessible to all staff. No need for personal folders to be shared in my opinion, safer for the person going on leave.
robyholmes Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 I was second @JATSO stance that if the person going on leave hasn't put the information in a shared area (Presuming you have one) they shouldn't get access. I have the stance that a personal area is for files relating to you, not files you create for your teaching subject. When a staff member leaves those files get removed, not moved to another staff member.

We do a version of this, where the person going away puts everything in one subfolder, then we either copy it into the replacement's own area, or provide a shortcut into that subfolder, depending on the duration and frequency of access required. We don't make someone's area available to all staff to help themselves. Peter
techy32 Posted June 17, 2016 Author Posted June 17, 2016 I do understand that personal drive should not be shared with other staff member but his personal drive is about 70GB and I am not prepare to copy data to 2nd staff's folder....... If the 1st person is happy to share his drive then it should be OK to go ahead....

EvLPhenom Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 Historically i have only been asked to do this 3 times in 10 years and 2 of them were by a head teacher, the way i have done it is give user 2 permissions on user 1's home folder and then just mapped that share via login script or now through GPP.
Davit2005 Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 We normally get this cleared through HR, give the temp user READ ONLY access permissions to the home share and send a UNC link to the user requiring the access.
dapaulio Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 Dodgy ground really... i have always tried to avoid this if i could help it but on the one occasion i have had to do it i have asked for written permission from staff1 to give either full or read only access then using item level targetting gpo to assign staff2 an additional mapped drive to staff1. obviously you would need to ensure the nt and share permissions are set correctly inform staff1 that it is then their responsibility to return after maternity to inform you to reverse the changes.
