geaves Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 I've searched on here regarding a replacement printer for EOL HP 2600n, done well lasted almost 7 years considering what got thrown at it. I have noticed from my search that most seem to advocate an inkjet over laser and I was wondering why. Is it purely and simply running costs as I can appreciate that an inkjet would be cheaper to run than a colour laser, but does this not sacrifice print quality. The school uses general run of the mill A4 paper, and printing colour photos on the laser is very good, if you send the job to some of our inkjets you can see the difference. I see that most business inkjets come with ethernet which is what I'm looking, install on Server 2012 and shared from there. Pros and cons of inkjet/laser and some suggestions would be helpful, as to price I've no idea, but I'm guessing I would have to be around £300-£350 max to justify otherwise someone will purchase something that's as cheap as chips then do the moaning afterwards. Ink/Toner cost would have to be another consideration, although at present the school uses compatibles for the other 2600n.
3s-gtech Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 You managed to get a 2600n to last for seven years? That's extraordinary. They were easily the worst laser printer I've ever come across. I'm not even sure where you got one seven years ago - ours were bought 11 or 12 years back (and long since dumped). Most won't advocate an inkjet over laser, depending on usage case. If you want print high quality photos, go inket (with photo paper). For everything else; colour laser, especially if sticking to normal paper. If you print photos onto normal paper with an inket you will usually saturate the paper and end up with a soggy, blurry mess. I bought a little HP LaserJet 200 colour a year or so back - not expensive to feed, decent quality, networked and cheap. If you want inkjets, look at the Canon iX series but beware of running costs (as with any inkjet), durability and the perils of using standard paper!
geaves Posted June 17, 2016 Author Posted June 17, 2016 We still have a 2600n running actually had to get someone out as 1 of the colours had faded, found out how to fix but looked like too much hassle....anyway for £65 is was back up and running. Yes I think laser is the only option as they won't use photo paper, had a look on Misco and the 400 range seems to be reasonably priced, it would be a case of deciding which one.

We have a few HP M251's but only for small workgroup/single users, Not sure i they would be up for cost per page or print speed for you but they seem to be reliable enough. All the rest of our colours are now Canon MFD's.

Funny you should mention Canon's we buy or have been buying cheap Canon inkjet's which are attached to the class workstation and they generally last about 3 years before needing to be replaced, Ok for the odd bit of colour printing but not so for heavy use. Don't think we would have a use for MFD's, although again saying that they have no scanner should they need one, the last one was removed from the office and resides in the server cupboard should anyone need it.
