Just got an email from One plus to say launch event is on 16th November in New York and 5t can be pre-ordered from o2 straight after the event.

To be honest, with the incredibly lacklustre OnePlus 5, and all that invasive telemetry lark, I'm done with OnePlus now. I'll probably keep half an eye on the 5T, but I'm not expecting much.

OnePlus left a backdoor in its devices capable of root access

 

Just a month ago, OnePlus was caught collecting personally identifiable data from phone owners through incredibly detailed analytics. While the company eventually reversed course on the data collection, another discovery has been made in the software of OnePlus phones. One developer found an application intended for factory testing, and through some investigation and reverse-engineering, was able to obtain root access using it.

 

The application in question is called 'EngineerMode,' which is intended to be used in factories to confirm that the device is working properly. We have confirmed it is installed on the OnePlus 3, 3T, and 5. It's even included on OxygenOS for the OnePlus One, but not the original CyanogenOS ROM.

NowSecure, a mobile security company that helped the developer find the password, has published a more detailed writeup about the backdoor. The post reveals that the poorly-hidden password was in fact "angela," possibly a "Mr. Robot" reference to character Angela Moss.

A number of mobile devices manufactured under the OnePlus brand by China’s BBK Electronics are vulnerable to compromise via a factory-installed app called EngineerMode that acts as a backdoor providing root access to affected devices. At this time, the exploit is most useful to an attacker with physical access to a OnePlus device or an owner looking to root their own device. OnePlus devices are more prevalent in markets outside the U.S. such as China and India but are gaining popularity in the U.S. A security researcher posting on Twitter under the pseudonym “Elliot Alderson” (a reference to the “Mr. Robot” TV show protagonist) discovered the problematic app on Monday. Within the hour, the NowSecure Mobile Threat Research Team set to work helping validate the root exploit.

Update from oneplus;

 

Yesterday, we received a lot of questions regarding an apk found in several devices, including our own, named EngineerMode, and we would like to explain what it is. EngineerMode is a diagnostic tool mainly used for factory production line functionality testing and after sales support.

 

We’ve seen several statements by community developers that are worried because this apk grants root privileges. While, it can enable adb root which provides privileges for adb commands, it will not let 3rd-party apps access full root privileges. Additionally, adb root is only accessible if USB debugging, which is off by default, is turned on, and any sort of root access would still require physical access to your device.

 

While we don't see this as a major security issue, we understand that users may still have concerns and therefore we will remove the adb root function from EngineerMode in an upcoming OTA.

if you opt out of the user experience program [...] then your usage analytics will not be tied to your device information.

But still collected and sent, presumably, just slightly more anonymised. Not exactly what I was after.

Shame, really. I have nothing against flashing custom roms but it's a pain that you have to from the get-go for privacy now.

 

At least the screen isn't upside-down though.

 

I think I'm still gonna go with the Razer Phone, but as always I'm waiting for 'consumer' reviews (as in going to the shop and buying one, not reviewing the marketing samples)

Sadly true, although probably no worse than the data Google collects.

Some of the online reviews mention a few aspects of the phone which are a bit disappointing. Also, I don't know if it's limited to the US but isn't Razer known for having poor customer service? :confused:

  • Despite the IGZO TFT technology, the 5.7-inch Razer panel turned out to be one of the dimmest panels we've tested recently, maxing out at 300 nits (230 nits in our initial tests)
  • The Razer Phone does not handle its massive 4,000 mAh battery well, with 62 hours of endurance rating. Standby and talk time ratings are solid, thanks to the Snapdragon 835. However, both on-screen tests drain the battery very rapidly. Lowering the panel's refresh rate down to 60Hz does not really help much either. Quick Charge 4+ is awesome and Razer gives you a charger in the box.
  • Stills come out noisy, even in good light and a bit too soft, especially near the edges of the frame. Lots of fine detail is lost and the dynamic range is about average. The Razer Phone is very inconsistent with exposure and easily over or underexposes shots. It is also stubborn about accepting spot metering. Sunlight tends to confuse it a lot and brings out a tendency to opt for a very warm color pallet. HDR is best kept on at all times. Indoor shots come out better.
  • Low-light photos are on the noisy side and not exactly impressive.
  • The 8MP, fixed focus selfie cam is serviceable, but suffers from the same overall issues as the main snappers. Again, HDR should be kept on to help it get less confused around sunlight.

Certainly no worse than what Google collects. And less said about Apple the better. You better believe they know your bra size even though you've never shopped for them with your phone.

Which is why I'm waiting for consumer reviews. I have this mantra that reviews of marketing sample are useful for a 'first look', but can't be trusted as a fair review. Companies aren't going to send marketing samples to people who slate them or point out too many flaws with their products, so I feel people reviewing marketing samples have 'more to lose' if they annoy their sponsors, so they might gloss over a bad feature making it out like it's no big deal, or might big-up something that's really not noticeable during regular use. Basically, whilst I don't actively distrust marketing sample reviews, I do question their integrity somewhat. I find that tech reviewers that buy the device after launch usually offer more in-depth and balanced reviews.

 

The screen is supposed to be really power-hungry, but 62 hours is no big deal since I charge my phone every night religiously. The screen brightness is the one I'm a bit fussed about. So we'll see :)
