LeMarchand Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 I've noticed the older viewers tended not to like the current series where as the younger(ish) viewers loved it. I would have assumed the opposite, but it's nice to be wrong sometimes. It doesn't happen often .
pooley Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 I'm 42 and hated it - so you may have something @DalekSec
elsiegee40 Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 I've noticed the older viewers tended not to like the current series where as the younger(ish) viewers loved it. On the various places where i speak to speak about 'Who it's normally people 40+ who don't like it where as people under 40 love it! (obviously not saying everyone over 40 hated it but the majority i've met have) For me personally, i think it was the best Nu-who series. Capaldi has cemented his place as my 2nd favorite Doctor (no beating Pertwee i'm afraid!) I'm 53 Like @ICTDirect_Dave I really enjoyed this series. In fact his comments are pretty much what I was thinking. I didn't get on with Capaldi's first series, but this one kept my interest. There were so many hints that a future Doctor would be female. Not a problem for me that we have no idea who the next Doctor will be yet.
psydii Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 Some spoilers as this post goes on. Thoughts: 1) having rewatched the relevant earlier episode, the resolution of the Bill's thread was consistent, and not Deus-Ex Machina. Friendly for small children, but in the context of what adults might remember, not so comforting. 2) The resolution of the Masters' thread, we've been here before. We've even had All Time Lords and Gallifrey destroyed and removed from history, and yet here we are talking about a story with the Master in it, again 3)JS was so much better at being the Master than I remember him being previously. Things that bothered me: The Doctor's body physically surviving the destruction of the floor. The re-programming bit, he's good but not that good. I'm 'head-cannoning' that to he was next to the computer for longer that it appeared due to the way the show was edited. Things I liked: The use of Bill's human form during scenes when that was not the physical reality. The occasional cuts to remind us what things were really like. Missy with the Doctor and the Master, and the ambiguity in her motivation and actions. Also "knock yourself out" The reaction of the non-Who fans with whom I was watching to the reveal of the cybermen and the Master. (they've seen enough to recognise the iconic characters, but not enough to pay attention to marketing). For me it's the first season in years where most of season landed adequately, and some of it went down very well. Really felt Capaldi has got his interpretation nailed, and Talalay really got the best out of the whole cast.
pooley Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 And the wife (not a sci-fi or dr who fan) said the Cybermen looked like button moon characters. I think it was at that point I gave up trying to defend the show.
psydii Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 The new ones or the old ones from the hostpital? People I talked to found them very creepy and disturbing - but that was from watching the first part build up from in the hospital, and without being 'spoiled' by seeing them before the reveal. That design would never work out of that context, and I guess that is why they barely featured in the second part. That said I've also never liked the modern cybermen aesthetic, too far from human, and to much like cheap plastic children's toy.

I thought they looked awesome and were faithful to the originals, prefer them to the new ones!

I think it was at that point I gave up trying to defend the show. You don't have to defend a show you like. While I was doing my degree a fellow student found it laughable that I liked Doctor Who. Referring to a story running at that time [Enlightenment, a Peter Davison story] he said: "Who writes stories about tall ships in space?" It also had lines like: You're not like any Ephemeral I've met before. It's a long-running show, and it will have low points. I like it. That's all that matters to me. 2
mavhc Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 It was great that the lesbian characters got a happy ending, still stupidly rare. Not sure if doing that after they both kinda died was inverting a trope, or just playing with expectations.
