system image windows 8.1 to SSD

So I have got some machines that are running windows 8.1, want to replace HDD with a SSD, will the built in System image backup utility work. i e will it cope with going from a large to small when i reimage

 

i plan to clean up one, take the image, and then put that image onto one with an SSD in

 

i do not have recovery media as it is Windows 8.1 for education

Is it not worth just going up to 10 instead of 8.1?

As long as there is enough room for the OS on the disk it shouldn't make a difference.

Could you not just take a .wim of one, and deploy it onto the ssd?

I'd say that 8.1 has a strong position in schools - it's stable, isn't being chopped around constantly with updates and features, and documentation is mature. It also has a lifecycle until 2023. I don't think I'd deploy 8.1 over 7 now, but no reason not to other than personal preference/interface.

I've not managed to get any of the windows system image backups to go from a large to a small disk without first shrinking the system partition to something that will fit on the smaller sized disk... I might be missing something when I do it, but it's quicker to shrink it to be on the safe side than to backup/reimage twice!
