[hosting] Dedicated Hosting Recommendations

We currently have 10 Joomla based websites (number still growing) that are hosted on Joomla Wired at £8 a site.

 

We are getting to the point where a dedicated server to host multiple sites would be more cost effective. Does anyone have any recommendations on companies? We are looking in the range of £50 - £60 a month.

I've got a VPS with https://www.unlimitedwebhosting.co.uk/ and would 100% recommend - they're a bit pricey in comparison to some companies, however their support really is second to none (IME) which for me I'm happy to pay the extra to know their support is ready if ever needed - I've needed them a few times but purely down to my own inexperience with CentOS.

 

They also offer dedicated servers, but I think one of their VPS or "Hybrid servers" would do you fine.

OVH are pretty good, as are Hetzner but it depends on your budget. We (EduGeek) use AWS currently but its not the cheapest but very reliable.

I use Hetzner for a personal blog and have always been impressed by them. I'm just wondering if i should be hosting them in the UK.

Been an OVH customer for a couple of years now. Can't fault them. I have 2 VPS's and a dedicated gaming server with them at the moment.

 

Also used Hetzner in the past, and can't fault them either! Had a couple of dedicated servers with them over a couple of years.

the storage boxes look interesting from Hetzner. Around £37 a month for 10TB storage with 20TB traffic

Do you have experience with OVH @ZeroHour? I was looking at their new VPS range the other day but read some bad things (however there's not much good to read about most host providers online).

 

EduGeek's Minecraft server is on a OVH dedicated right now (managed kindly by @localzuk for us) and before we went AWS we used Hetzner for our dedicated servers. OVH is variable in the VPS side, I would buy VPS from OVH rather than their re-sellers/sub companies. We (EduGeek) have had to block some of OVH's ip blocks as their cheap vps sub company was basically a hackers haven giving us a large amount of hack attempts.

You could look into Kimsufi which actually use OVH hardware and do very good deals. They offer limited support though so as long as your confident in setting up your servers and backups then you could look into that.

Sadly thats actually the hacker sub company I was thinking of, we had a huge amount of hack attempts from Kimisurf sold vps's so we had to block quite a fair few of their ip blocks.

That doesn't surprise me since their servers are so cheap and accessible to anyone. I only used them to try out some bits with windows server 2012 r2 but found they didn't support windows OS and had to image it myself using the recovery partition on the server.

 

I guess all you can hope for is an IP which isn't in a range used by some of the hackers lol.

@nathan - Highly recommend mythic-beasts.com. They're activity using IPv6 - https://youtu.be/91hN3PvYUrc, also they sponsor things like Gwiddle (https://gwiddle.co.uk/blog/post/4) - who offer free hosting for students. Its worth dropping them a email (tweeting them @ Mythic_Beasts) and having a chat, you should be able to get away with a shared hosting package then they'll help you grow to VPS (or just start with a VPS).

 

 

They've also just enabled HTTPS with a few clicks, for free, so DNSSEC, they also do domain privacy for as well - important for any personal sites, otherwise your details get spammed across the global. If this is for work - they also do PO orders

Wow - they are cheap... Shame they're used maliciously, probably not worth the effort of trying. May have to give OVH a try from people's reviews however.

We've gone through a few hosting companies over the years, sadly the one that was best got bought out by 6dg and the top notch customer service evaporated

 

Nowadays we make use of a server on OVH that seems to do well along with database and additional instances on AWS as well as some attacking clusters on AWS

 

All things considered I would ha e to recommend AWS, the cost isn't too bad especially if you make instance reservations, and their whole ecosystem has so many useful products! I know that my current project would take significantly more admin manpower if it wasnt for AWS

Personally, I've used the OVH UK for their cheapest VPS and ran a website or two on there. Fairly good support
