I've pre-ordered a switch and a copy of Zelda but I'm hoping the price for Zelda is a place holder as currently it's £60! I'll stick with the order for now but if the retail price of other games appears at £60 I might end up cancelling as that's kind of ridiculous. Edited by flyinghaggis

That's about normal for AAA games these days.

I'm generally OK with the price of the system as given the Nvidia Shield tablet retailed for around £200 by the time you factor in a a dock and the, fairly high tech, joy-con controllers the price seems about what to expect really.

The price of the accessories and games is looking pretty fierce though. An extra dock is $90, the joycon controllers $80 plus a charging grip which you'll need ($30). Pro controller is $70. These dollar prices are likely to translate nearly directly into pounds the way the exchange rate is just now. The price of the controllers I get to a degree given the tech in them but the dock is literally a plastic stand with USB/HDMI passthrough and a fan to cool the switch.

The games are just as bad with most of them listed at $60/£60. I can just about stomach that for a AAA Nintendo Exclusive like Zelda BOTW or Mario Odyssey but for I can't see me buying much else for it at those prices. If you look at the Amazon top sellers PS4/Xb1 games are generally ~ £40. PC games on steam even less than that if you shop around Cdkey sites. I don't think I've paid £60 for a game since I owned an Nintendo SNES/N64 and they charged more for some of the high capacity cartridges back in the day!

Nintendo-Switch-Launch-Titles-1024x512.jpg

I think the Launch 'Window' Line-up is generally OK but actual the 'Launch Day' one is pretty shocking. There are 5 games (Zelda, Just Dance, Skylanders, 1-2 switch[should be a pack in title, bomberman) and the only one of them really worth buying, especially when you think these are £60 games, IMO is Zelda. Bomberman sounds cool but let's be honest it's a £20 downloadable game really. There's no way they can justify charging £60 for Bomberman in 2017....can they? Likewise, some of the other games sound cool such as Streetfigher 2, Tetris/Puyo-Puyo and Sonic Mania but they need to be either some kind of budget range at around £20-30 or downloadable via the store for less.

I'm pretty happy they've started charging for online subscriptions actually as if they use the money to provide free monthly games and improve the service this could be really good. Especially given the quality of Nintendo's back catalogue. Hopefully if they do release monthly retro games they'll add things like speed-run/high score challenges and implement some kind of online multiplayer for older titles.

Hyped-up nostalgic Nintendo fan-boys like myself might be happy to shell out for the system but I'm not sure I see it having wide appeal unfortunately unless the online services like the store/subscription/social are markedly improved and they can get the game prices down to a competitive level. I'm gonna keep my pre-order and will probably hang onto the system so I can play Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart.

Don't get me wrong though. I really like the concept/look of the system and I was never really interested in the Wii U or 3DS so it's not like I'd buy anything Nintendo release. I think combining home/mobile platforms is a genius idea and the Joy-Con controllers along with a with what they offer plus a high powered touchscreen tablet sounds fantastic. Also the games line-up overall throughout the next year sounds decent. I'm just a bit nervous about the future of the console based on the current game pricing though

Pre-ordered with Zelda :) I haven't bought a Nintendo machine since the 3DS, but this one ticks all the boxes for me.

I have a PS4 and that will cover the big generic games like FIFA, Call of Duty e.t.c. This machine is one for my kids and family. The fact that its portable is a bonus.

Nintendo have never been about the best hardware, it's always been about their AAA titles. Playing some of the older games from the SNES and N64 on retropie last night brought this point home.

They just produce amazing games. I'm sure by Christmas this year there will be a Zelda/Mario bundle and some excellent titles available and the price may drop by then.£250 with 1-2-switch bundled would have been a better price , but early buyers pay premium.

A nearly £300 T-Shirt? :p

Hmmm looking at the line-up, I am surprised to see FIFA in there after the Wii U snub. That will be a heavy litmus test to see if EA actually adopt the platform or start releasing cut-down versions at the same price as the lead platforms and wonder why no-one is buying them. Skyrim I am already wondering how that is still being released...not only is it an old game but you can mod it to hell and back on PC for cheaper. MarioKart 8 Deluxe, a rehash but brings a lead title to the new platform I guess. Wouldn't want to pay full price as a MK8 for Wii U owner.

Splatoon 2 could be good. New Xenoblade Chronicles, hmm. New Zelda will be competing with the Wii U owners too cautious to move? Steep is another cross-platform and not greatly praised. Minecraft....again. Mixed feelings on this!

NOOOOOO! That's the version I want... That NX case is so cool. [i wasn't keeping track of versions, I thought there were only 2 versions.]

thats the thing i suspect most people will buy this as a 2nd console so for instance if i wanted fifa (and its got worse every year the megadrive 94 version is still the most fun) id buy it on xbox even though i own a switch. Thats the issue it needs exclusives and unless nintendo still have a lot up their sleeves i see long term this failing as hard as wiiu a least in europe/america there is a lot more merit im lead to believe in the portable side in japan where its against the vita and could win that race. Beyond botw and splatoon 2 there isnt much i want to the point i might actually cancel my pre order and just play botw on wii-u as the exclusive line up atm looks pretty bleak

mk8 deluxe being a full price game with no new single player content (bar some new characters/carts) is a kick to the nuts for anyone who bought it for wii-u

as to steep ive got it for xbox and its ok not great certainly i think id rather break out my 360 and amped tbh but if you want a chill game (no pun intended) its actually not bad but even the £25 i paid for it is probably too much

What's needed is proof that they have learned their lessons before committing to it. Wii U was marred by poor marketing, poor third party support, poor support to third parties to show them how to make the most of dual screen gaming and hardware that had power but a failure by Nintendo to show them how to unlock it and compete with the big three (It was all in the GPU whilst the others relied on the CPU for workload). They also had trouble with XB1 and PS4 being Intel based but the Wii U remained with PowerPC architecture, so it was harder to push a game over the three big platforms plus recompiling for Nintendo's special platform.

I do think Nintnedo may have shot themselves in the foot with the pricing though.

With their much vaunted cash reserves it may have made more sense to sell the console at a loss to get themselves back in the game and establish a foothold back in the market.

I have no doubt that it will sell well initially as Nintendo fans snap up the inital release, but those simply after a home console may just hold back for other offerings.

thats the thing wii-u sold well to start with but games dried up so sales of hardware dried up im not sure they have learned the correct lessons from it granted at least its not wii-switch and the messaging about wtf it is is better but by aiming it at a niche powerful enough to do 1080 but can be used on the go im not sure they havnt aimed it at a segment that dosent exist at least outside japan

That's it. You need the console sales to drive game production.

Nintendo are doing pretty well with pre-orders at the current price.

Nintendo Switch allocations sold out at many UK and US retailers

It looks like the Nintendo Switch is a 'sell out success' as retailers with pre-allocated stock all seem to have run out already. Various reports in the last few hours state that Amazon UK and US websites had sold out on Friday, GameStop sold out yesterday, and other US retailers like Target, Toys R Us, Walmart and Best Buy all list the console, which launches March 3, as unavailable. Some accessories and game carts are still available.

There's a glimmer of hope for UK-based Nintendo Switch fans with GAME still offering pre-orders at the time of writing. However, it must be noted that the retailer has "not received official confirmation of stock allocation", so it can't guarantee launch-time order fulfilment... During my own plodding around the internet I found that the Nintendo Switch (Neon Red/Neon Blue) was still up for pre-order at Amazon UK, but the more tasteful grey one was unavailable.

With demand and supply so unbalanced right now, it's not surprising to hear of eBay scalpers in action. Reports say that some eBayers are listing Switch console packs at $200 or more official MSRPs.

The problem I see with the Switch is that Nintendo have.. well.. Nintendo'd it all up.

The Switch looks impressive, but Nintendo's approach has been fundamentally flawed. Their tech demo's have felt gimmicky, there's still no concrete evidence on a good chunk of the hardware specs, terrible release titles (feels like they're basically banking on Zelda lovers, of which I am not) but the worst, worst thing for me, is the paid online services. Not because there are paid online services (though I do gripe about XBLG and PS+, and if Nintendo online play is Peer-to-Peer then I'll gripe about that too) but about the game 'rental'. Emulation isn't terribly difficult. You're basically letting me borrow a ROM file every month. That's all you're going to offer and expend me to pony up $UnknownCost each month? For the life of me I cannot figure out this approach. If it's anything over £3.99, it's not worth it.

Also, smartphone 'companion app'? Why? Just why?

I agree the Online service hasn't been explained very well. I'd imagine Nintendo are holding back announcements of this and AAA games to coincide with E3.

sensible strategy BUT with the limited games before then (and i doubt more than 2 at most will be and you can download it now announcements) the switch could be all but dead in the water by the middle of june as by then there will only be about 10 games out of which 1.5 look like must buys (mk8 is the .5 its good if you dont own wiiu if you do its a kick in the nuts being asked to pay full price for what basically amounts to some dlc)

True, we won't really know what the interface and online service is before the release date. I do suspect that they will talk about it over the coming weeks. Luckily I never bought the Wii U so MK8 will be all new to me.

It really matter what sort of third party support and how the Christmas sales go. From reading interviews from people from Nintendo , they keep mentioning the Gamecube. It could be that these games will be heavily featured in the Virtual Console.
