2 Pc's One Cat5

Hi,

We have a Sign-in System in our School Reception that is wired up to our Network, Great we have also installed a Screen for Visitors up on the wall to show Childrens Images and Heads welcome ect this has a small PC attached to the Back of it and we are currentley using the Built in wifi for this.

The Signal is VERY week and dropps out, We have looked and running some Cat 5 but the site staff did not want to do this, any way i have found a cat5 Splitter so I can connect 1 Working cat 5 and split the cable, one to our Sign in PC and one to our Screen.

I have been looking at, RJ45 Double Adapter for Lan Ethernet Cat5e Splitter Twin Connector 1 - 2 coupler | eBay

but it does not allow a connection at the same time! does any one have any ideas?

A 5 port switch? They're tiny and could probably be strapped to the back of the screen for example.

I've used splitters before in the same situation and it works, you need to have one at both ends of the cable though

You're supposed to have one at both ends. Effectively one port uses 4 cables and the other end uses 4. So you have 2 cables into splitter. Long cable between splitter, and then splitter other end that goes into 2 sockets in switch

 

If that makes sense?

You can get splitters / however take into account that they only run at 10/100, they look more like this :- 2 x Cat5e Ethernet Network Splitter Economiser Adapters CAT 5e RJ45 | eBay

One goes in the cab, one at your data point. If you wanted you could just use a small switch, e.g. a 5 port would do it.#

You would need one at both ends.

 

What they do is send the first connection on pins 1,2,3,6 and the second connection on pins 4,5,7,8

However they used to only be reliable upto 100mb non duplex.

The Hub would have been an option but I only have 2 power sockets 1 for TV 1 for PC

We dont have any data points on the side of the wall where the stuff is.

Yes 10/100 would be fine. better then the Wifi Speed we are getting

Those type of splitters do not allow you to run two signals, you need a proper splitter as I linked above.

I would avoid any splitters to be honest - at least with a switch (in theory), you could have a dedicated 100/1000Mbps link, which is more than enough.

 

I guess an easy solution would be to buy one of those power blocks, giving you one additional power outlet.

That or take the existing Cat5 lead, plug into a PoE WAP and add a WiFi adapter in the PC that doesn't have one... then Robert is your Mother's Brother.
