Keyboard cleaning!

Hi guys, whats the best thing to be using for cleaning keyboards? They are grubby as anything at the moment. I've got some heavy duty wipes but they seem to leave a sticky residue on the keyboard. Anyone got any (cheap) ideas? Cheers

We use an antibacterial surface cleaner (supermarket own brand is cheap!) and all-purpose wipes (same supermarket) as our kids have never been observed washing their hands. Gets rid of that brown grease that builds up on keyboards & mice (ugh) and doesn't leave any residue of note.

 

If you want to remove graffiti from keyboards (marker pen, pencil, biro) the best thing to use is methylated spirit (not denatured ethanol from science dept as it's useless!). Haven't yet found anything which can remove those damn gel roller ball pens though...

Um... we tip them upside down and give them a bl**dy good shake and then use anti-bacterial wet wipes.

 

Not very high-tech, but it's cheap and does the job!

Our kids vandalise the mice/keyboards regularly. They break before they get mucky enough to deserve cleaning.

The packet of blu-tak I have reckons it can be used to clean keyboards. Never actually tried it, though.

Many many years ago when keyboards were of good quality we used to put them in the dishwasher - [ after removing the keys and membrane first ]

Used to come up real nice.

That happens to us too and we pretty much change all keyboards and mice in the summer hols. We buy cheapo ones since they'll only bust them anyway.

Has anyone done the dishwasher trick more recently, i keep meaning to bung a couple of working old ones in the dish dosh one holiday at work and see what happens, if it works well then they can all go in

John, best bet is to do a test run first - remove all the keys first. Put them in a cup or box which can also go in the dish washer. You will need something with holes in to go over the top to stop them falling out. Or just put them were you stick your spoons / forks etc.

Remove the membrane of the keyboard, cover the USB or PS2 up with something and away you go. Just remember to remove the keyboard before the drying sequence....

LOL - sounds like fun but definitely not worth the agro for a £2 keyboard.

I've used aerospray (cans of compressed air) to blow out the bits that get in between the keys (its also useful for blowing the dust off of old monitors + out of projectors!).

 

Also tried using a screen-wipe but it didn't seem to do much.

 

Keyboards here are mostly kept in pretty good nick thankfully!
