  1. Baby Wipes always worked for me
  2. I've recently installed a printer on one of our SME PCs so they can print reports. The printer is OK printing from Windows but not from Successmaker. Is this a DOS driver issue or something similar? C
  3. When I used to purchase RM systems the price included both Windows and RM CALs.. Check your original invoices/quotes - if you don't have paper copies the documentation will be on the RM site under your school's account Caitriona
  4. I used them a lot in the past at a previous school and were good on price for bits n pieces. I found once they started branching into bigger systems and full solutions they seemed not to have the necessary after-sales support in place for the growth that took place - this is going back 3 years but have not had any dealings with them recently
  5. Has anyone had experience of installing this on a Windows network? 2003 server / XP station. I don't currently create my own MSIs - Heinemann say it does not come with MSI but they can ftp me an easyteach MSI that will enable install???? any comments greatly appreciated - Caitriona
  6. Is there a dummy's guide to installing an MSI to XP clients via AD on server 2003? Been running a MAC network for 2 years and used RM systems before that!
  7. I want to search for all external mail traffic in a mailbox via outlook. How do I get outlook to display full email addresses in sender and recipient fields? If I can set this then I can do an advanced search to find all messages that don't contain the school name. Is there a better way to do this? regards C
  8. I have been asked to print a list of emails to and from external addresses for one user. Not an exchange expert. How Can I see/list/seaerch the mailbox contents?
  9. I second that. the one annoying thing about apples in education is that they connect to anything, anywhere anytime....... Can be useful and I suppose it is a plus with macs in general - but not when you have kids sending printouts to the colour photocopier.
  10. After a recent rebuild of 10.4 and Open Directory an engineer could only get the users to match up with their homefolders correctly by resetting permissions. Now students can navigate to each other's folders. Does anyone know of a quick way to set permissions on a group of folders so only the user has access? I guess it will involve a username wildcard TIA
  11. Hi I ran a mac system for nearly 2 years and didn't get on with either of the backup solutions we tried. Retrospect was replaced by BRU, which was slighlt better. If you only have one server, have you considered a copy or disk image scheduled to run at night to a removable firewire disk? That's what I'm doing at the moment as server has been relocated just for music use. I have 2 drives and swap them over, taking one away for safe keeping. Happy to be back in PC land
  12. no, but I think I may have fixed it by giving everyone full permissions on the server profiles folder and propagating that down to all sub-folders and files. thanks
  13. Yes these are all OK
  14. I have had a problem on my windows 2003- server xp-ststion network for a week. Staff getting a message on login that 'roaming profile is not available' Then it cannot find a local profile and sets up a temporary one. Staff the have to set up email etc at each login. Where I have deleted local profiles they are not recreated. Have checked folder permissions and tried deleting server profiles for a few people. It is possible someone changed permissions somewhere - can say no more.
  15. Hi could someone tell me how I run delprof on all network stations at once, please? Thanks C
  16. Is it possible they may be unplugging network cables? Caitriona
  17. Hi It may be that the backlight on the display has died. Before going down that road, do you have and original boot CD for it? Try booting from cd (hold C key down when switching on with cd in drive) Alternatively you can boot from another mac if you have one. Join them with a firewire lead and switch on the faulty ont holding the T key down to boot in target mode If either of these work you should be able to use disk utility to check the hard disk - if not could be a hdd problem Caitriona
  18. Last Thursday morning no-one could access email on our Exchange Server. I have a combined Windows/MAC network - all classrooms and staff laptops are mac. Exchange and SIMS on Windows. Neither PCs nor macs can access mail. IP PING returns replies so communication is OK at this level. I have virtually no exchange knowledge but am guessing the communication failure is on the software level. All appropriate services appear to be running. can anyone help or point me in the direction of where I can buy in some help please? C
  19. Does anyone know how to create an addressbook at an exchange server that can be picked up automatically by staff Apple ibook laptops please. I'm new to both Exchange and Apple and have been unable to answer this from manuals/help
  20. Hi both - yes I did have a question amongst that lot - Thanks Paul for de-ciphering it. when I say things stop and start, yes I mean all of those. at first servers were just rebooting at random but the MAC OS 10.4.4 update seems to have stopped that. The firewall is hardware with its own IP address so not on the servers. Thanks for the tips though, I will check out the router port addresses. It's good to have another view regards Caitriona
  21. Hi All I have recently taken over a mixed windows and apple mac network with windows exchage server, sims server and application server running RM successmaker through mac stations. Also 3 mac curriculum servers, 1 staff server with squid and one webserver. No handover, no documentation and a 3 month backlog of work. I have puzzled out a lot of why things keep stopping and starting at random but not yet got to grips with why everything is connected as it is. Basically the main infrastructure consists of cisco switches to which all stations and servers (except the webserver) are directly connected. the main switches connect to a sonicwall firewall which in turn connects to the broadband router BUT the router is also directly connected to infrastructure switch. The webserver connects to the firewall and also sits between the exchange server and the firewall - connected to exchange server via a small asante switch. Hope this paints a picture. not sure why two separate connections to the router. Suppose the asante switch is instead of a crossover cable (it also used to connect to an isdn line which I am told by our apple supplier rep is no longer used. I have not worked with apple macs, exchange, webserver or firewall before although I have 20 years windows network experience. I also have no technical backup or maintenance contracts here so hoping this site will be good for contacts and exchange of ideas/advice

    mac networks

Hi Anyone out there running above. I know there are not many of us. Started new job as network manager in a school near home just before Christmas. after 20 years managing PC networks, mostly RM, I'm a bit on my own. have had a bit of training from suppliers. we have 5 mac servers (one a webserver), 3 windows servers (one exchange, one admin and sims and one running RM successmaker) Have had a lot of issues with loss of connection and random reboots but OS 10.4.4 seems to have fixed some. I need to know more about retrospect backup, and the workgroup directory mgmt e.g. can I create staff users who can just change passwords/ view student files as two staff members have admin passwords for this. No documentation from previous netman who left a few months before I joined
