Dos_Box Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 Hi all, I've been toying with this idea for a while now and think that it would be great as a give away at the next BETT and as prizes on the site, but given the amount of organisation it would take need to get a head start now. The idea would be to get a deck to EduGeek trump cards made up. Now, the orginal Top Trumps have 30 cards, but the custom ones can have up to 40 My idea would be to have IT technologies in there, in particular the ones that made big leaps. For instance we could have them divided into CPU's, technologies (the world wide web and wireless for example), operating systems, computer expansions (graphic/sound cards) and random with 8 in each catagory. What does need deciding on would be the scoring system as many of these do not share the same references i.e. a 486DX CPU needs to be scored against wireless as a technology. At the moment I have come up with these 4 catagories (we need, and are limited to 5) Date of release Impact (for instance whilst the 486DX was a great cpu at the time it was known it would be superceded quite quickly) Availability - A Cray supercomputer would be a 5 whilst a 3DfX VooDoo 2 card would be 90 - Remember the most awesome card in any Top Trumps deck always had an achilles heel! Longevity - Ethernet as a technology would score higher than wireless So if you have any ideas on what could appear on them, and how to organise scoring please let me know below. These could be really awesome if done right 1

For Example I remember paying about £200 for a 260mb hard drive!! (I had a 40mb Hard Drive at the time so it was a maaaaaaaaaaaasive upgrade)

Good idea although it may be a little hard to quanitify. A ZX Spectrum was more popular than a Cray, but which would rather have had Going to steal the Via CPU though. A TT deck always had a duff card which stood no chance at all of winning against any of the others

Graphics cards: Rage 128 Rage Fury Radeon Radeon 9700 Geforce 1/2/3/4/FX etc S3 Virge Matrox Millennium/Mystique/G200/G400 Sound cards: Aureal Vortex Gravis Ultrasound Turtle Beach Santa Cruz Hercules Gametheatre XP (That thing was a beast!) Then outliers like the PhysX or MPEG2 hardware decoders?

Now that would be amusing The popularity stat should be quite easy to balance. You make it relative to its target market. So the C64 was hugely popular as a personal machine, whilst a 1U HP Proliant is also hugely popular in the business market and a Cray supercomputer was massively desired in the research/data processing profession. all fairly similar i'd say.

It can be entirely subjective, you made the cards, you choose! Windows ME, concept index 1/10 vs Intel Core i3 concept index 6/10?

You could easily do several series I reckon. Home computing, business/enterprise computing, a professional workstation/gaming one with gfx cqrd and sound cards in, a Superpowered one for the really impressive stuff, it could be a running thing
