mikkydoos Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 Hi all, Easter will be time to get rid of my last physical machines converting them to VM's. I have a server running Server 2008 & Sims.net plus other associated sync programs etc. (It wont be a fresh install, I'll convert with VMWare Converter or deploy an image) Are there any SQL issues or other gremlins anyone has experienced that I should be aware of before I convert ?? Cheers in advance
FreelanceX Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 Have used Microsofts P2V multiple times on SIMS Servers (and other types) and never had an issue. Mounting the VM in Hyper-V and testing it first before you flatten the server is always a good idea though. Cant comment on VMWare, I am Hyper-V through and through.
3s-gtech Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 I have P2V'd my SIMS server, first time it didn't work too well but it was under-resourced. I then built it fresh as a VM, moved the DB over, worked fine. I recently V2V'd it to move it to a new server using VMWare Converter, that also worked fine.

pantscat Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 It's a straightforward process to p2v a SIMS server. Generally speaking you want it to have fast storage, and in an ideal world enough RAM so that it can have most or all of the mdb in memory (so depends on the size of your SIMS database) A couple of CPU cores should be sufficient.

3s-gtech Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 Yup, it just lumps them all in together as CPUs/cores. Our host has two octo-core CPUs.
