Arcade Machine PLANS!

So I have decided, as a treat to myself, because I've always wanted to do this... I'm going to build an arcade machine!

 

It's going to be powered by a pi 3 and run piplay. I watched a few youtube videos last night for inspiration.

 

 

I think we've decided the cabinet is going to be made out of MDF. It's going to be a table top one, but we are going to build a stand for it, so it will look floor standing.

 

We've got some spare bit lying about like monitors and whatnot. I want a square monitor in mine for authenticity!

 

Today I'm gonna have a go at getting piplay to run on the raspberry pi I have here at work and see what it's like. I'm well excited. I'll post any progress made here.

(although this all stemmed from watching THIS youtube video and kinda snowballed!)

 

 

The only reason I didn't go for this one is that I can't for love nor money get me a hold of a pi zero!

If you dont fancy trying to code an arduino leonardo for the controls, i'd suggest this KADE device | Open – Configurable – Programmable it comes with a mapping tool so you can make it appear as different devices and chose what the different pins do when connected to ground.

My house mates & I invested £100 in one of these old beauties way back in 2004 when we were in our second year at uni. It lived on the landing at the top of our stairs.

 

SNK neo geo arcade machine boards, harness, etc... | eBay

 

It could take four cartridges and we could easily change it from free play to coin-op. We had a couple of the metal slug games a beat-em-up and something else.

 

It was a great little earner and contributed toward a rather large beer fund.

 

It amazes me that you can build your own for next to nothing nowadays.

i want to know if any one has a coin op solution? I've never really seen an easy coin op solution for home arcade cabs

I'm going to build an arcade machine!

 

Something I want to try now the Raspberry Pi does wireless and bluetooth: hook the Pi up to a large screen, run a game. Have it act as a wireless access point and/or bluetooth device that people can use their phones to connect to. Have the only thing the access point serves be a single-page HTML game controller widget - user comes along, connects to wifi access point, game controller appears, plays game.

The Under the Pier Show on Southwold pier is awesome. Its full of alternative arcade mad machines made by Tim Hunkin. Who was half of the team that made Channel 4's Secret Life of Machines series.

 

Well worth a visit if you find yourself in Suffolk.

My husband did electronics at GCSE and made a money box. He said he used a light sensor to detect a coin going in which then set off a tune to be played. I imagine you could use a light sensor to add a credit to the game...

 

Got my buttons and joysticks... seller is sending me more wires because I am short!

I built a full size cabinet years ago but ended up dismantling it. I am in the middle of designing a pedestal that I can wheel in front of a wall mounted TV and after that's done I'm going to build a visual pinball. I've been researching a lot lately so I'm pretty clued up on most of the arcade build related stuff so happy to help with any questions.

Did some testing last night. Fully assembled buttons and joystick and tested some OS'es out. One we liked was called RetroPie. Proper chuffed I went for LED buttons that light up with power from the USB!

 

 

Don't know if I'll stick with RetroPie, need to download some good ROMS and test that they work OK on it. I really liked PiPlay but it doesn't seem compatible with the Pi3 yet... might have to try again though.
