It's all been done before. There was a data centre in one of the legs of Sealand.

Not overly sure why you'd do it this way. Why not put the racks on-shore somewhere, and have your power generation in the place where you'd put one of these things?

Oh yeah, they're getting whined at for not using renewable energy, but not doing something that will (if done in great numbers like they're planning) increase the temperatures of the ocean and fuel ice cap meltings?

Honeslty I'm not as fussed as I probably should be. Yay complacency. But still, I can imagine what I'd expect others to complain about.

would a datacentre under the water make any appreciable difference to the water temp anyway? as long as the water is in motion it would barely have time to heat up I would of thought. If it was in a "pond" on the other hand I can see that being an issue

Technically yes, conversation conservation of energy and all.

One test isn't going to make any appreciable difference, but on a much grander scale, water near the coasts will certainly heat up.

The article I read talked about a combined cooling and electricity generation capability from being under the waves. So while the unit would generate heat, it would also demand less power from conventional generators thus helping to reduce carbon emissions and thus climate change

true as I imagine the point of it is to cut down/out the use of ac and just bring the temp down by being colder in the first place and in a medium that is better at moving heat than air

Depends on how deep it is.

 

If you can survive the pressure, it'd be fine. If not, a couple of mods for deep sea would make it fine.

Depends on whether it costs more or less than getting a sweet Big Daddy/Sister suit and doing the work while submerged.

 

 

If I turned round and said it's going to cost £X and have Y downtime, I'm sure they'd consider letting me get muh Bioshock on.
