I seem to recall the last script required an Updates folder with sub-folders named "CU", "Flash Player" and "Servicing Stack" with relevant updates downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

This works slightly differently to the old script so I have written some instructions.

 

1.Save the script into the root of a new folder. e.g. D:\W10x64.

 

 

2.Copy your Windows 10 v1607 July '16 ISO into this folder (same location).

 

 

3.Create an Updates subfolder (e.g. D:\W10x64\Updates) containing three subfolders (CU, Servicing Stack and Flash Player).

 

 

4.Download the updates linked below that match the architecture of your Windows ISO and save each .msu into its relevant subfolder within the Updates folder.

5.Amend the $AppsToKeep and $ISO variables on lines 17 & 18 of the script.

 

 

6.Run the script from an elevated PowerShell or PowerShell ISE prompt on a Windows 10 PC. When it finishes you should end up with an image that contains the latest updates and no unwanted apps.

No, the new script doesn't do this. I started to build a combined one on Friday, but my head wasn't clear enough to do so. Shouldn't be too hard to knock up by mashing together the correct parts of the old and new scripts.

It doesn't. I was planning on creating a separate script for that since it didn't make sense to integrate updates (or modify registry settings) with a function called "Invoke-RemoveBuiltinAppsOffline".

My thoughts exactly. I'm now aiming on a once-a-year deployment plan and will probably stick with the March edition, although I'm beginning to get the impression that the March edition has more new features and the September edition aims to fix the problems with a couple of new features :-)

 

Thanks for this script, it really helps. I add a few extra things to my WIM, such as a extra registry entries, a stripped down basic defaultstartmenulayout file... I also strip out these packages

Not sure if it was a typo, or something that's changed in 1709, but..

 

C:\Users\Default\AppData\Microsoft\Windows\Shell

is now

C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Shell

 

(And for avoidance of doubt - that says shell at the end, not S space hell as it randomly seems to render on my Chrome browser here?!?!?)

Just used this script on my 1709 iso. Installed on a test laptop and noticed a couple of apps are stilll lurking...

 

I have the 'Connect' app still in the start menu and the 'People' app on the taskbar. I was also hoping 'OneDrive', 'Paint 3D' and 'Mixed Reality Portal', would have disappeared also. I didn't watch the entire sequence of apps being removed from the WIM. Do you think it missed them or they cannot be removed?

 

I have run the get appxpackage in PS as above and it returned this:

Paint 3D can be removed if you delete Microsoft.MSPaint from the $WhiteListedApps variable. I kept it in myself because my school actually uses it.

 

The OneDrive setup program can be prevented from running when users login by deleting the relevant entry from the default user's registry hive (HKCU ... Run). I can post more detailed instructions if you want?

Hmm, never seen that, of course I block exes from running from c:\users, so it never installs, because that way lies ransomware.

 

And in GPO:User>Admin>System> Don't run specified Windows applications I put onedrive.exe, to avoid an error.
