Self hosting Social Network site?

After a conversation with HT, ICT coordinator and a review of ICT skills framework etc I was asked about innovative ways to get our children (primary) up to speed with social networking rules and etiquette etc.

 

Has anyone come across any self-hosted software that ties into AD that we could possibly try out with our children ?

I found elgg was pretty good - no sure about the AD plugin

Alternaitvely, not self hosted but a few of my primarise use Edmodo.

Aimed at schools, you create an Network and can add staff and students etc... Only accessible by people in your network, and you must approve people who request to join (join feature can be switched off, or link set to expire every x days).

WordPress with the buddypress plugin. Some WordPress plugin have quite good LDAP support
