Recommend me a good FTTC router!

So, I have finally gotten sick of the HomeHub that BT provided so am in the market for a proper router.

 

Can anyone recommend me a FTTC compatible wireless router for the house I live in? I'm willing to pay a reasonable amount for it.

 

I'd even go with a router and wireless AP separate to each other if necessary.

I second the Billion routers.

There are some reviews of that first one having weak wireless signal - our house is kinda spaced out so we would ideally want something with great wireless.

You thought of going for a separate router and AP combo? It might give you more options when it comes to wifi.

If I were to get FTTC at home I think I'd be looking at a Draytek VDSL modem to hook up to my draytek 2830. Otherwise I'd be tempted to have a play with a Microtik router of some description. I've already got Unifi APs around the house, so that wouldn't be an issue for me. You like to play and learn right @localzuk - off the shelf is boring :-)

I agree - HomeHub 5 sucks, mine is currently stuck in an orange power light meltdown with BT saying a fault on the line so we will ring you on how to fix it - if its a line issue, i want them to turn up and fix it ffs.

Change your ISP to talk talk as they have the most extensive router for free of any ISP, I have 29" thick walls and I still have an exceptional wireless signal which reaches out to the edges of our property with all our devices attached and streaming TV from 2 Firestick Kodi installs,

 

Why pay for a router when you can get a decent one for free, BT routers have always been pants anyway!

Draytek 2860n-plus is your friend.

Use the drop down menus to select a different model they do a standard N version which is a little cheaper or no wireless and then get a wireless AP separately which is probably a far better option.

I don't rate the talktalk routers, DHCP kept crashing on the one my parents had.

Draytek if you don't mind spending the cash and as your a geek the less id10t proof GUI won't be an issue for you

Had mine 4 years and not a problem, just recently had the new upgrade for free and its as good if not better than before, for free its a no brainer and also the best free ISP router available,

 

Maybe your parents have a faulty one? could be that they may require the new upgraded version?

 

BT have the most complaints of all ISP's around their cheap routers!

 

You can please most of the people all of the time but not all of the people all of the time!

I have Sky FTTC, and since I got it ages ago I have a separate modem to the Sky router. I used to use a Cisco adsl router when I had ADSL, but since Sky at the time didn't work with other hardware for FTTC I did what you suggested and have a separate WAP to the router. The Sky router I have is actually pretty rock solid, it's current uptime is 650 days! It only is a router, I have the wireless turned off in it.

 

For wireless I have a unifi AP, it's mounted in my hall (most visitors think it's a smoke alarm so don't give it a second thought) and it's signal is so much better than anything else I've tried at home. I get full signal everywhere in my Victorian terraced house, including in my garden.

 

@Rob_D - is that a shiny black curved talktalk router with two lan ports? My parents have one and I had exactly that problem last time I visited them. I ended up giving my phone a static IP as I was on the verge of causing some damage to it's dhcp server as it was pretty obviously just broken.

They've got the plus router, It looks like the same spec but with 4 lan ports.
