Server room air conditioning failed

So I went into the server room this afternoon, and it felt a little warm. The servers sounded a bit louder as well. I grabbed a thermometer and it was showing 25c when the air con is set to 18c. A quick chat with the site manager to get the air con engineer out and caught the business manager up, I went back and checked and the thermometer had gone up to 30c servers showing 32c. In the end I have had to shutdown all the servers as they were starting to show overheating. Looks like I will be in at 5:30 tomorrow as the engineer should be in at 6am. Hopefully this is the last bit of "bad luck" as its the third thing, and they say it comes in 3s.

Well I feel your pain - our server room has two a/c units and they have both failed twice with very nearly catastrophic results. After the 2nd time we had the Daikin units completely removed and replaced with Mitsubishi ones, and all has been good so far. We do have a climate monitor which emails me if the temperature rises but obviously if it happens overnight then it could be a while before it gets noticed. Anyway hope you get yours sorted quickly!

We had this happen a long time ago when only using one of those portable units.

 

I knew something was wrong due to Concorde hiding in the server room, and also the door handle was warm.....

 

Hopefully sometime between now and 2017 I will get a chance to work with the site team to implement my super duper "we no longer need air con" cooling solution.

Ours used to not automatically restart if we had a power cut/blip. The servers would keep on rolling, but the AC would be off. Cue server room hitting 40°C and a couple of disks dying. Thankfully it has been setup to restart now and works well, plus our power supply is much more stable. It's not a fun experience though.

Been down that route, luckily, I say luckily, as we worked in same office and the heat hit me like opening an Oven door on a Monday morning. 1 Core switch had overheated and a few servers. It was a case of leaving door and windows open till the single AC was fixed.

 

Really need more than one AC unit I feel.

So had the air con engineer out at 6am this morning. The external unit has packed up, the compressor. So had to hire a unit from a company in London who were really quite cheap and delivered within 3 hours compared to hss who I have used before. Repair bill is £1.5k ex fat as it is 1 month out of warranty! So a new unit it is at only £2.3k which is very reasonable I think. The important thing is we got everything back up and running quickly and surprisingly instead of everyone complaining as they need things now... Everyone was asking for it to stay down as it was so calm and relaxed without email?! If it doesn't work (user error) they want it working asap and they are complaining, but if it is really broken then they don't mind?

Still baffles me how many architects think it's a good idea to put servers in small hot cupboards on the south side of buildings, or in a boiler plant room, then have to specify massive air con to cool it down. Grr. Also seen IT suites with uninsulated central heating pipes running along the walls and non opening windows. "I don't know why it's so hot in here"
