Looks like they've now been updated on the Volume License Page but left the release date as it was.....

I installed this update on a test PC.

 

Start menu still crashes, and start menu layout deployment fails. So they haven't fixed those two bugs yet.

There is no open bug about start menu layout. We use it here and it works a treat.

Also, upgrading using the ISO reinstalls all the metro apps I'd removed! Does anyone know if the WSUS upgrade does this? LTSB is looking more and more tempting...

Yes, exactly that. The start button does nothing until rebooted. There are errors logged but the user just sees an unresponsive start button.

Update seems pretty stable since I installed it. Also upgraded to Office 2016 which is super speedy.

LTSB for me. Lightning quick and plan on pushing it out sitewide next summer.

my laptop does the same (pro) but my surface pro upgraded fine

1511 Messed up every machine we tested it on. Same issue, the start menu stopped working.

 

It's just an in place upgrade, completely different version of Windows, really stupid way of doing it - It makes sense on personal machines but maybe not so frequent.

 

After testing Windows 10 on some classroom PCs with this, I've decided that we'll now be using LTSB for full deployment.

I can't see how Microsoft expect us to deploy 1511 - it's relatively large, but more to the point, it takes forever to install. If they continue like this, we'll be imaging devices several times a year - it's quicker, rather then installing the update via WSUS or manually. Imaging devices takes approx. 20-25 mins max, whereas installing/upgrading build 1511 on my i5 with a Terabyte SSD took considerably longer.

 

I've also found (for BGfL subscribing schools), the old, trusty (crusty) Cisco client they want us to use no longer works on Windows 10586. I've reported it, so will be interesting to see what answer they come up with.

 

Also (on a related note), I've had more success creating/deploying a controlled Start Menu on build 10240 with basics such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher 2016, along with Computer, IE and Chrome - only one problem, it only works for Domain Admins. I've tried deploying it so it works from the local C:\ drive, as well as a UNC path - in both instances it appears blank, nothing in the event logs. Interesting to see 10586 doesn't improve on this (reading above)!

 

I should note (not sure if it's relevant). Access to the local C:\ drive is disabled and the Run menu is also disabled, so end users can't type in UNC paths. Any ideas what the issue might be?

This is exactly why I use LTSB only. Its just not practice to use the other system.

To the best of my knowledge however, we (as Domain Admins) can still control the flow of Microsoft Updates via WSUS in Enterprise/Edu setups and that includes the likes of the 1511 update. Depending how you setup WSUS, you could also make a point of Declining it in WSUS.

No doubt you can but to my understanding, it will fall out of servicing scope over time. LTSB is what it is for 10 years, giving business stability. Im using LTSB here now and it runs so quickly without any apps injected into it. Highly recommend looking into that over the enterprise version.

@robjduk what's the logon time like for a user with a new profile? It's horrific with the standard Win10 Education image and most of that is "installing" the modern apps per user. Would be interested to hear if LTSB is better.

This is the exact issue I'm seeing on Windows 10 Edu - It only works for Domain Admins and not other users, so not 100% convinced it's fixed. I've even tried placing the XML in a visible and hidden mapped share, and still the same result. The end user has a blank Start Menu.

 

Why it can't just work like Folder Redirection.. I'm all for XML if the damn thing works!

But you have 8 months to install that update. Having lots of laptops it would be quite a big job getting them out of trolleys to install the updates twice a year in each of our schools.
