Assuming those are the Klingons, they look "interesting" but could probably be explained by the fact that they are part way through the "Virus" form ENT, but deffo looks gritty.

Going to be interesting, as it should be in the "Prime" universe but (this is where the finer points of temporal mechanics may kick in) surely if it is 10 years before STO it would already be in the Alternate Movie timeline as the Romulan ship killed kirks dad so would be around somewhere.

I am just going to wait and see, as it has the potential of being really awesome, but may not be the ideal "Trek" universe (which was already being carved up in DS9)

But the virus on ENT was to explain the look of TOS Klingons, and since this is before Kirk, one assumes these are Klingons that were not in contact with infected Klingons.

I thought it was the "Prime" Universe, but it definitely looks more "Kelvin".

Just watched the first two eps on Netflix.

I enjoyed it. It’s not the JJ verse but it’s not another by-the-numbers Berman series like Voyager and Enterprise either. This one has potential I think.

Watched the first 2 episodes last night.

Theme tune didn't pull me in, which is par for the course for Star Trek theme tunes.

I would've liked to see a bit more character development before it launched into action - it is a TV series and not a movie after all.

I think they went a bit too far with the fierce looking Klingons though. Klaang looked about right IMO in ST:E.

At least they included exploding consoles and people throwing themselves across the bridge when things exploded.

The theme and credit sequence were a bit lacklustre. Thought the Klingon "Tudor" togs looked a bit silly.

Also... did the cameraman have some sort of inner ear problem? He had difficulty keeping the camera horizontal ;).

That's just modern shows I think. Wobblycam is all the rage. It makes it easier for the director to make it look like something's happening but isn't.

It was more the constant Dutch angles. Totally agree about the overuse of wobblycam in a lot of shows, though.

In space no one can tell you which way is up.

However all ships will gather in the same orientation, unless they've bit shot, then they'll be on their side.

Haha so true! :pound:

It seemed more like a movie than a TV Series. I guess it might calm down a bit and stabilise from Episode 3 onwards.

The effects looked good, space battles were impressive, nice set, very flashy but lacking a lot of substance. The lead characters felt rather weak and the Klingons have lost all their cool factor. They used to be a warrior-race mixed with the subtle backstabbing of politics in the background and a rich culture when you look deeper, now they are Space Orks. And for God sake someone get the universal translator working so we don't have to hear them speak nonsense. Aliens speak English so viewers can understand them during long dialogue scenes without irritation.

As for the Federation, the ships always have the feeling that the Captain is a father/mother figure to the crew in addition to being their Captain. They are someone who keeps order but understands a ship is a floating city and community. I wasn't getting this feel on the Shenzou, they felt like a military unit that wasn't prepared for combat. They also lacked the prim and smartness I'd expect to see on the bridge of a Starfleet ship. As far as sci-fi goes, it'd get a pass as an independent IP but not as Star Trek.

Episode 3 onwards is going to have a lot of work to do.

Also all ships are the same orientation because one of the design principles set in TOS was that ship-to-ship action takes place on a naval plane to prevent viewers getting disorientated. :)

I'd totally forgotten it was coming on and watched the first two episodes last night.

I think it's going to take me some adjustments. I was pleased they jumped straight in at the deep end as it gives you a hook but will need to keep that going.

Fingers crossed that it can.

So it's just a navy show without the cool hats? Or requirements to do CGI water.

Seems like the klingons will be more complex, not less, we're seeing their side of the story too. These 2 episodes seem like they're the prequel to the main story on the Discovery.

It's more Star Trek than Enterprise (exploring strange old worlds we'd already seen in the future for the first time, but having to twist the plot so it still worked) or Voyager (killing people off, then pressing the big red reset button so it's all meaningless) at least.

So, I think we’re at the halfway point of the season now and the last episode ended on a cliffhanger. What do people think so far?

I have to say, I’m still enjoying it. I think that this has been the strongest first season of Trek there’s been so far. Last week’s time loop episode with Mudd was fantastic. Saru and Stamets are good characters, Tyler is shaping up to be an interesting one. It’s also novel having a much more ambiguous character as the captain as well.

I do wish they hadn’t changed the appearance of the Klingons so drastically but overall, I think it’s working.

/edit So ok, there’s one more episode to go before the mid season break but whatever, question still stands :)

The episode with Mudd was good, but had such a weak ending.

Not for me, on a personal level time loop episodes are a padding to series IMO, reusing footage and repeating things gets right on my wick.

Apart from that I'm loving it.

That's a fair point. I do find them a little frustrating too but this one didn't bother me. Apart from the ending. It kinda felt rushed and an easy way out of the story.

It's getting more Trek-like. The last two episodes felt more like the Federation we know than the earlier bloodthirsty episodes (not that Lorca's warmongering has dwindled at all). The crew are starting to open up and we are seeing more about life on-board the Discovery beyond their service as Federation personnel.

Agreed. The last couple have been much more Trek than the first few. Now we have to wait until January for more. Blooming Americans and their holiday season stuff.
