Definitely not. I had one of these but the Halfords special Ripspeed one when I bought my car. What a pile of excrement. With a resolution of about 3 x 6 pixels and the touchscreen requires you to punch it to get a response.

You definitely can, it's the whole head unit that's interesting to me though. I'm no engineer and making a screen I can neatly slide away in to the dash when parked is probably out of the bounds of my skill

You may be able to tolerate the usually awful touchscreen if the remote is any cop or the physical buttons on the unit can control at least basic functions. I tend to stick with big brand stuff when it comes to car audio, but even the cheap tat has come on a long way.

why are in car touch screens even a thing? surely its about the dumbest idea since the inflatable dartboard. Yes lets use an interface that instead of just being able to reach down and push/turn a switch that has positive feedback and can be done without looking requires you to look at it every time you want to do anything with it. Can someone please explain the logic of that beyond it looks pretty?

I have a 7 year old Alpine Bluetooth stereo atm and I'd really like the ability to stream music from my phone (a technology not supported by my current unit).

I have been looking around for a unit with these features + DAB but am still narked that car DAB aerials still need either external ones fitted or sticking on the windows. Either way, both generally involve trailing wires at some point.

You can get convertors that allow you to use your normal aerial but these can be hit and miss.

I splashed out and bought the Pioneer SPH-DA120 App Radio, touch screen and display are brilliant and the sound quality with stock speakers massively improved.

 

It was pricey, but seeing as I spend at least 3 hours a day in the car, it proved a good buy. Brilliant for watching things at dinner too!

My last unit (before it got stolen) was a Kenwood BT60, again much better sound quality with the stock speakers, loads of EQ settings, including graphic, decent screen, BT streaming, rear USB, was a good radio and I'd have that over a screen any day! Was around £140 new

Not bad for the money but I've had one in the past as a stop gap, didn't quite fit it for me, but I am young and thus listen to music at stupid volumes and at higher volume is when you need better quality. If it's for background noise and easy listening, pioneer do some great budget units now, £80 I think including DAB, but it is deckless.

My el cheapo "BEAT" unit does BT, Aux, USB and has an SD slot.

 

Shame the programmers made some very weird choices that I've had to find workarounds for. (Though I still can't set the clock to anything but GMT, so it's -1h for 1/2 the year).

Not an audiophile and car is hardly whisper quiet (so just as well) - so can't speak to the audio quality. Sounds fine to me and rarely push the volume more than 1/2 way. Unfortunately the poor programming means I wouldn't recommend unless money is really tight. They may have fixed things since then, though.

I must admit I've never heard of them and 'poor programming' doesn't exactly fill me with confidence!

Apart from the GMT thing, the TA is hit and miss. "Away from home" doesn't pick up as many as I'd expect, and (unless I choose my preferred station when I start) at home it seems to pick whichever station shouts the loudest (possibly by design). Unfortunately this means I get the station with the guy who sounds like a monkey on drugs slurring the announcements.

 

The main problem is the random function which randomizes your tracks until you turn off and then it restarts in the same random order from the first track it picked. I've found a workaround, but unless I'm careful it offends my OCD.

 

When there were reviews on Amazon these were picked up on, so hopefully they've done something about it since.

I'd love to fit a 2u unit in. There are somenice Pi based things like this: iCarus - Raspberry Pi CarPC | Shop but again, the space isn't there.

There was a company I found a couple of years back (and never managed to find again!) which sold facia kits to allow you to mount small tablets in a dash so you could use them as entertainment systems, GPS, ODBII receivers etc. (they had mini USB chargers built in too!).

I'd love to find them again.

Well, I got a Pure Highway H260DBi refurb model from Halfords today.

It was £85 and saved me £40 off the book price

It has DAB, Bluetooh hands free and Bluetooth audio streaming. Can't wait to fit it
