Hi All,

I'm looking to upgrade our edge switches which are currently Edimax 10/100 and are very noisy and located in classrooms or working spaces. Can anyone reccommend any decent PoE Gigabit switches which are silent?

Thanks,

That's brilliant, I'll check it out. I'm looking for 24 port switches. I had looked at the HP 1820 which are fanless but not if you have PoE.

We used little 8 port Cisco SG300-10P switches for our PoE requirements, which were placed in conjunction with larger passive non-PoE switches in areas where noise was an issue. Not a cheap way of doing it, but might suit if you don't need loads of ports in each area.

Just checked and page 16 of the detailed specs HP 1920 Switch Series (QuickSpecs/c04394247.pdf) say that the PoE+ switch has a fan, and a pretty noisy one at that! Even the 8-port PoE switch has a fan :(

That's interesting... I've got the 16 and 24port PoE 1920's bought in the last 12 months and they don't have a fan or it's really flipping quiet!

I've also got 2x 48 port and they are like a howling gale - not recommended for use in quiet areas!

Most of the 8 port PoE switch won't require a fan, but for the 24 and 48s its kinda a requirement if you are going to go near capacity or you'll soon find your switch failing.

One other thing to consider when buying a switch is the dimensions. The HP 1920 48 port switch is very deep/long at 44cm and won't fit many smaller cabinets. Compare this to an HP 2530 48 and it's 32cm deep - 12cm difference is huge, considering you have to insert a power lead at the back too! :)

The HP 2530-48G I have are much much quieter than pervious POE switches I had - tolerable in a classroom if in a cabinet.

Agreed! We have a 2530-24G-PoE and a 2530-24G in a cab in our main office area, they're there if you listen for them, but our office staff don't seem to mind it :)
