Thin Client OS?

Is anybody able to recommend an operating system to use on really old computers to be nothing but a thin client? We have Remote Desktop Services in place and staff/students use it to work from home. Ideally just some minimal Linux distribution that is pre-programmed to launch an RDP session to the server. I've looked around on Google but there seems to be very few solutions, which all for one reason or another won't work.

I've used 2X stuff in the past. They're owned by Parallels now. I think there's still a free version if you're averse to paying for it.

 

Thinstation may be worth a look too though I've not looked at it in over five years

Thanks, I hadn't heard of this one before. Is it a discontinued product? I can only seem to find news articles about it going into beta, and there are no Microsoft pages for it. However I have managed to find an ISO download for it.

Nope its still in use. However you will need to have software assurance to use it. If you don't im afraid it isn't an option.

We were using windows thin PC with reasonable success, but due to me investing in some nice machines from ICT direct and the dropping-like-flies nature of the client hardware (p4, 512mb 40gb) we've retired the server and all of it's associated machines.

I had a solution in place like this.. Using Ubuntu.. as soon as Ubuntu booted up it automatically started an RDP Session into a server user logged in and that was it... even clicking logoff or shutdown would shutdown the machine. Would take a few moments to boot up...

 

I believe I had Ubuntu start rlogin then pointed rlogin to an IP on boot up which brought up an RDP session with a login screen.
