MathieuPerron Posted October 14, 2015 Posted October 14, 2015 Well I've been trying to get Apple Configurator 2 to work for 2 days now. I work a the University's Library and we are lending 20 iPads to students. I have used Apple Configurator 1 solely to refresh ipads after it is returned, wiping every apps and settings the user could have added/changed. Everything is automated when the device is connected to the mac mini. But now I don't seem to be able to get AC2 to do the same automated process and most of the time I'm getting an ACUInternetServiceContext error on apps install. After watching WWDC 2015 there seems to be a way to achieve something like this with automator but I'll have to check into that after the errors disappear. Way to turn a simple process into 12 complicated ones!

Joanne Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 I got a blueprint onto one iPad and I can't get another blueprint onto a second iPad yet... seems to have an issue with either downloading the last app or installing the first... hmmm....
Garacesh Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 I've recreated all the settings from Profile Manager to local profiles on the MacBook that has Configurator 2 on it. I figure I can at least get them in working order and enrolled into Profile Manager, and if Profile Manager starts working at a later date, we can move across to using that to modify settings. Just updating 15 iPads to the latest iOS and then I'll be pushing everything out en-masse.. Here goes nothin'.

apearson Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Hi Livelee. I've not had too much success with AC2 but I'm pretty sure you cant use the old spreadsheet of keys. They need to be converted back to the VPP deployment method by contacting Apple. However, the number it tells you to call is in the US! Very helpful. I need to do this but haven't yet worked out who to call in UK.

Secondly, I'm not sure what you're talking about, VPP spreadsheet, but in AC2 to add VPP apps, create a new blueprint, double-click to edit it, select Apps, click the green Plus at the top-left-mid (next to the Blueprint button), select Apps, then login to VPP that way. They all show up there. You can also use the downloaded app installers like you used to, by clicking 'Choose from my mac' (bottom left of the add apps window)
tmoon-mint Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Okay so I have fixed my issue with apps installing. The apps appeared to be stuck at multiple stages, some at "loading..." and some at "installing..." Me being as impatient as I am and knowing that it didnt take this long to install apps in AC 1.7.2 pulled the cable out assuming they were stuck. This isnt the case and you have to be patient. The key is to look for the syncing icon on your iPads once this has gone it is safe to unplug. I have now built a full set of 30 iPads using my blueprint and am slowly bringing in any existing devices to be updated and have their management profiles swapped with the new ones. Happy days

Does each ipad need it's own apple ID? Or can they be made to share a single ID? The school has no MDM in place. No. An iPad does not need an Apple ID if it is Supervised (Also referred to as Managed). The option at the top-middle of Apple Configurator 2 'Prepare' (little cog icon) will make a device Managed (if you have no MDM, then just select Manual, and once you've made it Supervised, use the 'Skip Configuration' option in the iPad initial setup. You can then create a Blueprint. A Blueprint contains information about the device name*, settings and apps. The settings are modified by creating a Profile (File, New Profile) which is then loaded into the blueprint (Add, Profile). Apps that have been purchased via VPP are added in much the same way (Add, Apps). Once you have your Blueprint set up as you would like, you can then apply the Blueprint to any iPads connected to the machine running AC2 Feel free to ask me if you need more info I've spent pretty much the entirety of this week getting to grips with AC2 for the same reason you have - no idea what to do, got passed down to me, adopt a 'break it and see' attitude. * I'm having some trouble with getting them automatically named so I'm doing it without and naming them manually via AC2 AC2 has failed to even update one single device here. All my apps are free and I'm still getting this error Edit: seem to be having some success by disconnecting the ipad, going through the whole Hello startup, then trying to pus the apps to it. Edit2: Spoke too soon. Removing my apps 1-by-one to see if suddenly starts working. Edited October 16, 2015 by Garacesh

Nice useful error message too Are you using apps specified from your Apple ID or have you downloaded them locally using iTunes? When I downloaded them locally and deployed them that way it fixed this error for me. I can even deploy paid apps it just has to verify with Apple the first time it runs.

Katalyst Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 I've tried everything I can to get Apple Config 2 working but it's not being friendly, topped with the fact I manage all my iPads with Meraki which doesn't support Apple Config 2. How I got around it was using config 1 again. It still supports the newer OS that's out which is amazing.

The ipads currently have some profiles on them. Is it possible to export these locally to the mach so I can add them to others, or even edit the profiles, or even see what they have in them? Not as far as I'm aware, but there aren't really that many things you can configure, so it shouldn't take you longer than 5 minutes to create a new profile. I've now logged into the store on AC2 with the VPP account, it pops up teling me I have to allow AC2 to mange the VPP account, that's good. I've not purchased any apps yet but if I click on the add app icon it tells me that the VPP account is being managed by another MDM solution. Unfortunately I can't comment on that one, haven't ran into that issue. It let me sign in straight away, and we use* Profile Manager as MDM. * Use being quite a strong word, as it's not really working right now..

Situation I have now is that there's a variety of free and paid for apps locally on the mac. I can send them over to the ipads easily but when they run they ask for an apple ID. Looking at the apps in itunes I can see they have been bought with an apple ID somebody at the school has setup. It's not the VPP apple ID though. Regarding the free apps if I look to buy them via the VPP site it says: "Managed Distribution: Free apps are only available in bulk using managed distribution. Assign apps by using a Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution, such as the latest version of Apple Profile Manager. You retain ownership of apps which allows you to revoke and reassign them as needed." So does that mean I need to set that up? Or can it be downloaded and rolled out via AC2?
