InterwebsGuy Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 So far I can not use apple configurator 2 to do what I was doing in the old version: -Prepare iPad and restore from a backup It seems like until there is more documentation on how to use apple configurator 2, I will stay away from it. This is a big deal for us too. I can't think of any good reason why they should have removed that functionality. Sure it can restore a back up, but then as soon as it prepares it to supervise it, it wipes it! Config 1.7 manages this, so why can't they allow 2.0 to do this? Madness.

I also can't send paid apps via AC2 as apparently I need to migrate all licences to VPP managed licences and send them via MDM. I don't want the boys' iPads on MDM !!!! So I think I will stick to AC 1.7 until there is more people using it and more people giving help and support.

AC2 can distribute the VPP Managed Licences though, you just need to sign in to your VPP account in AC2. It doesn't require MDM. This is probably one of the better things about AC2 - it's just a shame it's totally useless to us at the moment!

I signed in with my normal apple ID that I used on iTunes to redeem codes and then push apps to AC 1.7. But still, I have so many iPads that are on AC1.7 and licences that are already installed. As long as AC1.7 works I'll stick to it. I might use AC2 when IOS10 is there, and only setup the new iPads with this.

The migration worked, it just the UI that is different ! It's hard to get use to... It seems like you don't have groups anymore, or supervised iPad tab, unless you plug your device to the mac. 1

I guess the positive thing about this is a device can have multiple tags unlike the old group system was was more like AD OUs. 1

I couldn't see a way. I've just abandoned AC2 for now until either some updates are released for it which improves things or it's better documented. 1

hyb80 Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 (edited) We're muddling through it. It does not like it if you have a backup of a supervised device that you want to restore to. It appears in the the list of unsupervised devices and when you try to Prepare it it says it is already prepared. Method I have settled on is: Clean restore and update > Prepare > Apply Wifi Profile > Apply Blueprint with Apps (pre-downloaded in Itunes then copied over within the Blueprint settings) + MDM settings (to lock the devices down where possible) Oh and then manually apply wallpapers on top because it does do it right first time. Also finding if you want to apply a wifi profile and an MDM on the same Blueprint, it fails because the iPad is not quick enough to connect to the wifi / internet and so the MDM profile install fails. I managed to update some primary school ipads to IOS9 - but then couldn't manage them from the Macbook running AC 1.7. I needed to update to AC 1.7.2 but can't do that unless I update to OSX 10.10. You can't download 10.10 so I downloaded 10.11 and this now tells me I cannot use AC 1.7.2 because it ONLY works on 10.10. My head is still spinning. 1

You can't download 10.10 so I downloaded 10.11 and this now tells me I cannot use AC 1.7.2 because it ONLY works on 10.10. My head is still spinning. Cripes :\ sounds a right mess. I am on 10.10.3 and cannot update AC to 1.7.2 just says temporarily unavailable, maybe they are trying to sort it out.

The mac is was on was running 1.7.2 but was updated to 10.11 from 10.10 and the AC 1.7.2 still works, so its just Apple being awkward.

Griff Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 Just an FYI for anyone who is on Yosemite but cannot update AC from 1.6 to 1.7.2 as it says "item temporarily unavailable" you need to-do the following; Within Applications folder right click on AC and Compress into a zip (just to back it up) Drag AC into trash can and empty Open App Store and under purchased re-install AC 1.7.2 (don't search for it as it will only show AC 2) Should migrate your database over and work 1

Meanwhile Photos opens up randomly for them. Gone back to Ac 1.7.2, apart from being the usual untested mess AC2 doesn't offer a lot over 1.7.2 at the moment. 1

Sheridan Posted October 9, 2015 Author Posted October 9, 2015 AC2 can't cope with mutiple ipads either - if you connect a sync trolley it randomly changes the number of ipads showing. I.e out of 16 it shows 10, then 14, then 15 and then 8. It constantly flicks about so you can't attempt to apply any profiles. I've gone back to 1.7.2, and that now seems really flakey on 10.11 - it crashes regularly now. Nice job with the testing apple!
