Hardware that is given to staff / recycle

Hi Guys

i was wondering if any one had a form for when pc's are to old and are given away to staff or are going to be recycled

I knocked this up quickly a few months ago. I get the head to put ticks in the approved column and then get him to sign and date it. I then staple it to the receipt from whichever disposal company I use and file it away. You could probably adapt it for your needs.

If you are giving to staff make sure they sign an agreement that you will not provide support for them and they are received as seen. We had staff ask me for support with old school hardware and got eggy when I said no!

i remember in my last job we had to do them because the head said so but good thing is this head says we dont yay

Also worth considering adding something distancing yourself and the school for any damage that may be caused by use of the equipment as it's electrical, if it shorts out / loose live wire etc. that's the reason we've not given old equipment to staff etc. though it'd be in working order at the time, if something did happen you know who they'd hold accountable...

Also, you need to make sure that disposal in this way covers your WEEE responsibilities. That should be covered on any handover document - that they have full responsibility for safely disposing of the item, with serial numbers logged.

I give redundant hardware to charities or recycling companies. From past experience staff will either keep asking for support or when broken they will simply dump it in the staffroom for you to deal with. Better to just dispose of it completely with no returns!

We sell to staff, then eBay or recycle them.

At one of the Schools I visit, they have some still decent laptops, 4GB RAM, Core 2 Duos, HDMI, so still just as good as some £250 laptops. What they've been doing is raffling them off to parents or giving one away randomly to people who go to certain events. Nice extra few quid for the schools and incentives for people to visit.

Do you keep PAT testing records on each device you "give away"? , what would happen if you were accused of supplying faulty electrical goods which burnt a member of staff's home?

 

Someone raised this question, which we immediately stopped giving kit away to staff.

Well i am a pat tester so i have to keep reckords any how and i am just going to get them to sighn a disclaimer so would be covered
