Interactive white boards not getting enough USB juice it seems?

Morning,

 

Looking for the best solution to a sporadic problem, our Hitachi DUO FX boards keep reporting that there is insufficient bandwidth, these boards plug straight into the USB sockets in the classroom PCs there are no extenders or other cabling involved.

 

Has anyone else had this issue and what did you purchase to boost the USB signal?

I discovered when i took over this site that we have this with RM Ones. The solution in place from the previous incumbent was to leave them unplugged and just use powerpoint.

 

Depressingly I have discovered the teachers were happy with this.

Thanks I was thinking of powered hub, but was wondering if it could also be driver related?

First thing to do would be to figure out if it's a lack-of-power issue or a lack-of-bandwidth issue. As suggested, try a USB power supply if you have a spare one around to make sure the board is being provided with enough power. You could also try a different computer attached to the board if you have something spare - maybe something with a misture of USB 2 and USB 3 ports. We've got an issue with some boards seeming not to work with USB 3 ports on some specific machines, although oddly enough they seem to work okay with USB 2. USB 3 is supposed to be able to provide both more power and more bandwidth than USB 2, so it would rather seem to imply a (USB 3 related?) driver issue as much as anything.

I had exactly the same issue. I got a reply from Hitachi Europe saying that it a usb bandwidth problem and nothing to do with powered hubs etc. What I have done is to purchase a separate USB card (Startech 2 port PCI card part no PEXUSB3S23) and installed that. I did have to move the keyboard/mouse to the new card as the smartboard doesn't seem to like USB 3, and plug the smart board into the onboard USB 2 socket. The smartboard is the only thing connected to the onboard USB ports. That seem to have worked for me. I've got another 8 to do. Hope this helps someone.

We've had issues with front USB ports not having enough power, not just for whiteboard. Usually we just swap connections round and put in the back ports on the motherboard and works fine.
