Google Chrome Enterprise GPO - Home Page URL Not Working

Hiya,

I have set the attached a screenshot of our group policy settings for the Chrome home page. It doesn't appear to be setting the home page though, its just using the default. We are using the Enterprise MSI installer and the latest ADMX templates. We have no new tab policies at all. The home page button doesn't even work.

Any ideas please?

I think you need the browser to open tab on home page to be set.

Google Chrome does use home page in the same way that IE or Firefox does, "Home page" is just the page it goes to when you press the "home" button. The page that opens when you open the browser is theStartup Page

You need to go into your GPO and set the options under Google/Google Chrome/Startup to Action on statup > Open a list of URLs.

The way you have it configured should work. Presume you have that set under User Configuration and not Computer Configuration?

Strange, once I got past the difference between home page and start tabs I've never had a problem with Chrome policies. Must say I've stuck to startup tabs and not done much with the Home button though.

Have you checked the group policy results on the client to make sure the policy is definitely applying as you expect? (from a command prompt, type rsop and enter for the current local policy).

Are you using the latest Chrome MSI and policy templates? They change the policy settings quite a lot, you'll need chrome and the template to be the same vintage.

Both latest MSI and ADMX. I may disable the home button and change the startup page to get around the issue.

Startup pages are the way most people are expecting to see their homepage I reckon, the home button is used to deliver this only occasionally.

I can't get any of the chrome GPO settings to work. Workstations just won't pick them up. I'm using ADMX and 'User Configuration' settings - Chrome Enterprise v.45

Have you tried just using the ADM and not ADMX. Its what I am using and everything is working ok.

Yup, I've always just used the ADM templates, never had trouble with them not applying.

Not had any problems with the Chrome ADMX myself. Our homepage is initially set through the master_preferences file with the other settings via GPO.

I try to avoid ADMs in general since they can increase the size of your SYSVOL folder quite a bit.

I did have an issue were is did not seem to work. The solution was to apply the old ADM template then taking it away seem to fix the problem. Now I am just using the new ADMX templates.

I've found that it imports two Google Chrome folders in the GPO editor.

Try setting it in both, and setting the 'what happens when you start chrome' setting and the 'what happens for a new tab'.

This seems to be my issue. None of the policies apart from one seem to be applying!

Was there ever a solution to this issue? I'm having the same sort of problem getting the Chrome ADMX to work on a non-domain computer running Windows 7 Enterprise. In fact, none of the settings I set in gpedit for Chrome are applying. I've downloaded the latest ADMX to work with Chrome 45.

On the Computer configuration portion, and for both the 'Google Chrome' and 'Google Chrome - Default Settings' sections, I'm setting 'Configure the home page URL' to Enabled, and setting a URL, and the 'Use New Tab Page as homepage' to Disabled. Under 'Startup Pages' I'm setting 'Action on Startup' to Enabled (Start list of Urls), and 'URLS to open on startup' to Enabled (with defined URL).

I've restarted the system, but the setting never applies. I've run RSOP and the setting are effective. I've used this before on non-domain computers, but with older versions of Chrome (like from 6 months ago), and it worked fine. It's like something has changed.

Some Chrome settings - such as the homepage - are now only honoured by the browser when the PC is joined to an AD domain.

I thought that was going to be the answer, but hoped I was wrong. So, I guess the master_preference route is the best option. This behavior must have changed since March 2015 and with earlier versions of Chrome, because the homepage settings in the policy (using an ADM) worked for non-domain PCs. Now, neither ADM or ADMX works for the homepage.

Try disabling the "Use New Tab Page as homepage". This worked for us when we had the problem you describe
