plock Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Our bar tab is usually about £50? I've emailed my boss explaining that we should be adopt something like that here!
Pottsey Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 When did you change that…. Or That wasn’t there before. Happens far to often. Like this morning when someone came to pick up their laptop that had been left lying around saying said that’s not mine, I don’t recognise xx and yy. It was there laptop and the stuff they didnt recognise had been on the case for over a yaer. Hey what’s that new box on the wall? You mean the 3 year old amp with volume button for your interactive whiteboard and speakers?
Dean Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 I have an ICT teacher that every so often informs me that the network seems very sticky today!! Too which I usually reply sorry I am sure I washed my hands after cake! What I think it really means is that she didn’t know how to do something whilst teaching..!
pete Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 "The kids are finding games with polar bears, can you block polar bears?"
enjay Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 the pointy haired boss says that because he doesn't understand what it is that Dilbert does, it cant be that difficult. I've asked our Receptionists to phone me whenever I get deliveries; normally things are left on a shelf and the caretaker brings them round but since some of my orders can be quite expensive I don't want this happening to them. Once, a box was just left on the shelf for me instead and the Receptionist said she hadn't told me about it because it "wasn't very heavy so couldn't be all that expensive". Sigh.
enjay Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 HT Hi Kev, can you take a quick look at the projector in the hall ME Yeah boss, what seems to be the problem? HT Its really yellow ME hmmm their watching the simpsons! That's just brilliant!! I do now have coffee all over my monitor, though :-(
witch Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 No, apparently I don't have a name - and I am thinking of putting up my various qualifications so that least I can be 'the engineer' rather than the technician!! Today I asked the teacher whose class were allowed in the the IT suite to 'play' last lesson to be very vigilant near the 4 new machines with TFTs as the children were likely to get a bit excited about them. She looked me up and down and said, scathingly; "I do have a whole class to look after, you know"

Sirbendy Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 "But, I can't do that..i'm a TEACHER..."..heh..you can't expect a teacher to manage a room..OMG..be fair now... I sometimes get asked to scan the CCTV for some piddling infraction like a child hiding the projector remote, or on one occasion getting a paper plane in the back of the head (and it was a bloody good shot too, we saved it for posterity)..and you see either: 1. Teachers sat at a PC doing their own thing, while the class goes to hell 2. Teachers assisting one kid, oblivious to others running/buggering about, throwing things, leaving the room etc 3. Teachers just standing around doing little or nothing to enforce law 4. Teacherless classrooms where they've nipped out(!) 5. A big post-it slapped on the camera saying "SOD OFF!" or, rarely.. 6. A well controlled lesson with good kids, as opposed to the usual candidates for the "daily happy sunshine bus for little people who lick windows". We usually change passwords to "muppet". Serves as a point. We have speculated about charging for changes though..hmm.
witch Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 I didn't say anything but I am going to have to do something, as by next week 2/3 of the machines in that suite will be all singing and dancing, with TFTs and optical mice. The suite is in a block housing the top year (8) and they wander in and out all the time. Has anyone any ideas of what to do? Notices? Warnings? What to say to teachers?
daveyboy Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 A classic phrase 'The printers stopped working' but I wonder if this has happed to you - I got the call - about a photocopier/printer in our staff room, exactly like this one - Panasonic DP-8045. Going into the staff room, with the smell of burning plastc in the air I thought the worst. I was wrong. So wrong. It was worse. The said staff member had filled the the paper tray with the correct size paper................. Just did not take the plastic wrapper off the ream of paper first. Speechless..........
Domino Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 witch, they wander in and out? not blummin likely! insist the room is locked when not in lesson time.

That's a classic. Give that person a badge. Preferably one that reads "Pillock".

That's what we do. Make 'em scared of ye.
tech_guy Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 Our bar tab is usually about £50? Well, 4 x Dominos Pizzas @ £14.99 equals? Oh, and I forgot, sometimes we get away with charging staff too!
witch Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 I can be quite scary but I have nothing to threaten them with...the head doesn't care much and the room can't be locked as far as I know. And if it could, the teachers would just lend the key to the children anyway! I can't bear the thought of anyone damaging my new kit - seems like abuse to me. As far as I am concerned they are MY computers and if anyone touches them......

mattx Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Back to the classic Phrases, I've lost count how many times I've heard: " Do you have a spare copy of office ? "
elsiegee40 Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Back to the classic Phrases, I've lost count how many times I've heard: " Do you have a spare copy of office ? " Closely follwed by "I thought you just had disks that we could use..."
tech_guy Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 We get this one all the time: Staff: "I need a laptop setting up in the main hall to show a PowerPoint presentation". Techie: "That's no problem, when do you need it for?" Staff: "Now".
john Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Back to the classic Phrases, I've lost count how many times I've heard: " Do you have a spare copy of office ? " Closely follwed by "I thought you just had disks that we could use..." Yup never gets old that one, but theres a solution to that, a flyer for "The Basement" and told all you need to know is on there complete with a big shiny * next to the schools suggested version of Office to ensure they get one with all the programs they will need to do there GCSE and A Level work, clearly they could mix Open Office with MS Office but if they are wanting to use MS Office to start with they may as well get everthing they will need.
OutLawTorn Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 CCTV/Webcam in the room? One solution we have used is to attach an old "dead" webcam to the roof in one corner of the room... vandalism dropped rather significantly after that one We have an intranet package that can reset AD passwords, and it defaults to "MYpassword4" whenever we reset a student password. There are quite a few students now who can remember that, but can't remember what they change it to... even tho a lot just change it to MYpassword3 or MYpassword5 ... might have to consider changing the default... a variation on muppet sounds good
enjay Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 theres a solution to that, a flyer for "The Basement" The Basement is for students only - the staff can't currently buy from it, although apparently they are planning on changing that but not saying when. In the meantime, Office 2007 Home and Student costs £75 (and can be installed on 3 computers), or Standard Academic for ~£115 if you want Outlook and Pro Academic for ~£130 if you want Publisher too.
enjay Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 the head doesn't care much Then give up - without management buy-in, any measures you decide upon will fail. Sad but true.
Sirbendy Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Oh dear, yes. The "Spare copy" thing..we get it for both XP and Office. We just hand out OpenOffice instead. As to the "immediate resource needed" bit...we get that a fair bit. We refuse to do it, unless it's urgent. "Can we have a projector, speakers, remote pointer and someone to operate it in the theatre in 10 minutes please?" "Nope." "...?" "Prior Notice."...we just stick a copy of OUR T&C in their face and say "forward planning, please." They are getting the message now. Much like the occasional "can you do "X" job please?" at 5.14.55pm, when we finish at 5.15. "Well..let me think about it.....ummmmmm...*click to 5.15*..no, come back tomorrow, we're closed. Tata!"
