Windows 10 Education VS Enterprise - Response from MS

If your using Education then you have to do the traditional wipe and load approach.

I'm going Enterprise as I want to upgrade machines for ease. Education is looking to be just a SKU

Yeah that's why we are waiting a year to see what Microsoft will do with Education, I expect it to be a bit more than just an SKU.

Well spotted. I'll see if I can get clarification.

Response from my contact at Microsoft

LTSB - *not* available in education SKU. As an aside we would expect devices on the LTSB to be non-internet connected devices – e.g. laptops inside tanks etc.

Current Service Branch, this is what most enterprise / education SKU customers have will do the following:

- Security patches (patch Tuesday) done as normal

- Feature updates – customer can defer as part of current service branch, they can do this to essentially be 2 “versions” behind current until they are required to update

Further clarification (unable to edit previous post)

One last piece of clarification – may or may not be relevant to the forum thread. Essentially LTSB is about rights vs. actual functionality – i.e. education SKU does not include the actual functionality but education customers do have the *rights* to use the enterprise SKU which does have the LTSB functionality.

This is the reason why some documentation is confusing – some detail rights as opposed to included functions.

This does not change the guidance though which is that no education customer should be on a LTSB unless they have a mission critical device in a tank, or x-ray room or something

We noticed on our VLSC, under "License Summary" that we now have explicit mentions of Windows. We have 10 Education and 10 Enterprise LTSB, whereas before today we had a "Bundle - Desktop Education" which was Software Assured against double our FTE count. I think we're just going to push Education version out, as we've just trialled a student machine and it's activated fine via KMS etc.

According to Microsoft Volume Licensing Products Terms (http://www.microsoftvolumelicensing.com/Downloader.aspx?DocumentId=8969, page 42):

4.9 Academic Programs

The following applies to customers in all Academic Volume Licensing Programs:

4.9.1 Rights to Windows Enterprise LTSB

Academic Institutions with Windows Enterprise SA or Windows Education SA install Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB in place of any permitted perpetual instance.

4.9.2 Rights to Windows 10 Education Edition

Academic Institutions with Software Assurance for Windows Enterprise or Windows Education have rights to install and use Windows 10 Education. Academic Institutions do not have rights to install Windows 10 Enterprise Current Branch for Business.

Yes same here. I will like walking into an IT suite and seeing Windows 7 Education on the logon screen!!

Little things...............

Hopefully you'll be seeing Windows 10 Education, otherwise something has gone badly wrong.

Just seen an interesting benefit of Windows 10 Education on this newsletter, would be good if someone from Microsoft could confirm (but I imagine it's correct given the partner publishing the newsletter is quite a well known one)

OK many of them may well be entitled to the free upgrade right now but in future once it expires could prove useful, or for anyone unfortunate enough to have an old Vista powered device...

Windows 10 Education student use benefit

The Windows 10 student use benefit is a new licensing benefit of EES (Enrolment for Education Solutions), OVS-ES (Open Value Subscription – Education Solutions) and School programs. The Windows 10 student use benefit aligns with the existing Office 365 Pro Plus and Microsoft Intune student use benefits. When institutions license faculty and staff at full coverage with Windows 10 Education, Microsoft will grant students a free upgrade to Windows Education edition.

The way I read that Microsoft table (rightly or wrongly) was it applied to organisation owned devices rather than users' personal ones e.g. machines shipped with Vista Home Basic and not on upgrade rights via EES.

Allowing it on BYOD as well is a nice touch once the 1 year upgrade window expires.
