RowlandoGloom Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 Hi @AlexB - what email address did you use to request the KMS key? [email protected]
AlexB Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 What he said :-) I took the address from the vlsc page
AlexB Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 Thinking about it, you may be best to check your vlsc page as I think different regions have different addresses and I can't see your country on the mobile client.
Sheridan Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 Still no kms keys here, emailed that address but no response as yet! Min you, a brief test shows the nasty parts of windows 8 are all still there: - apps you can't remove - painful login speed for new users - no simple management of start menu (generating an xml ffs, surely this could have been better managed in GPO?!) My original plan to upgrade a small suite is now on hold, 10 is a bit too problematic at the moment.
AlexB Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 They took about 4 hours to respond to my email, so don't write them off yet :-)
Arthur Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 (edited) Still no kms keys here, emailed that address but no response as yet! I also e-mailed that address, but it took four days to sort it all out. The person I was speaking to didn't understand that I wanted the KMS host key and not the KMS client keys despite me clearly stating that I wanted the KMS host key for Windows Srv 2012R2 DataCtr/Std KMS for Windows 10. After every e-mail I had to wait another 24 hours for a response. So annoying!!! apps you can't remove Which apps are you trying to remove? I removed almost all of them from the .wim file itself (offline). The only ones I left were Edge, Calculator and the Windows Store. I can post the PowerShell script I used if it would help? painful login speed for new users Once the apps have been removed login speeds are a tiny bit quicker. Do your users have local, mandatory or roaming profiles? Edited August 17, 2015 by Arthur
Sheridan Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 @Arthur, I would like to see the powershell script you used thanks. We tried and seemed to get errors (can't remember exactly what!) but it was on Enterprise We want to remove the crud that comes with 10 and make it a more streamlined login (no mandatory or roaming profiles in use here) I wonder if I get a reply offering me the KMS client keys in a few days then!
sjatkn Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 (edited) Can you stop the annoying Hi we're just getting things ready screens via GPO or hack? I assume you mean the one you get when you log in to the machine, I think it only happens on first login. I was at a Microsoft organised technical event where someone who had been using W10 TP for a while and they had redirected just about everything they could and still found that it took several minutes to set the account up. The Microsoft Education team were aware of the problem and had made it clear to the Windows OS team that as far as education were concerned a long login time was not appropriate and needs to be fixed. All it takes is for students to use a different machine every time they go into a lesson and a good chunk of the lesson would be lost in waiting for the login to complete. It's not such a problem is business where you tend to use one machine every day and also for longer periods at a time. Hopefully the education team will keep on this and get the Windows OS team to resolve this problem soon. Edited August 17, 2015 by sjatkn Added the quote to make it a more sensible reply.
snagrat Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 I've got second login to any computer down to about 30sec using roaming profiles and folder redirection. Only apps I have left are Cortana, Store and edge
Sheridan Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 Yes it's the initial login speed I have an issue with. As you say students moving around the school will waste time simply logging in. Not acceptable and a big step backwards. I remember my first login to a windows 8 pc, thinking how poor an impression it gave. Seems like not a lot has changed so far!
DrCheese Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 Which apps are you trying to remove? I removed almost all of them from the .wim file itself (offline). The only ones I left were Edge, Calculator and the Windows Store. Got rid of store & calc, I found a site that lets you readd the old windows 7 calc back. I'd throw edge under a bus too due to no extention support (Breaks impero) but you can't so I'll just block it for now. I can't get rid of windows feedback. My original plan to upgrade a small suite is now on hold, 10 is a bit too problematic at the moment. It's random start menu bug's that are holding me back now. I can't say, pin documents/pictures/downloads to the left hand bit above Power (even tho it's in default profile, it doesn't hold) - Pinning of apps is ok but it will randomly refuse to open or search doesn't work.
Peter56 Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 Any one having this error after a sysprep? "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access them" Only happens on a few computers. Cannot access the start menu, Explorer or the recycle bin.

Yes - if the sysprepped image contained windows updates. The roaming profiles are killing us, now. With a sysprepped image and copyprofile=true, you can log in once fine - start menu, search and notifications area all work, but log off and log on again even on the same machine, and none of those things work at all.

We seem to have narrowed it down to one perticular laptop. will know more in the morning. But we did use copyprofile and did update it before it was syspreped.
Peter56 Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 Copyed the pre-syspred image onto the faulting laptop ran update and it installed a few new updates, syspreped but still the same results this is an Acer Travelmate P253M. Yet the same image on all the other Acer laptops we have is fine!

I really hope the education team manage to get something sorted out soon on this one, I've just tried calling the Microsoft UK (Reading) switchboard to speak to somebody in the Education Team, to be told that there isn't one!?!?! - It's a real pain when most of the features within the O/S tend to be aimed at businesses where it's usually one person logging into one machine first thing in the morning and staying on that machine all day - in a school where you have lots of logging on and off's during the day it's a real nightmare and slows everything down. I was hoping when I saw an Education version of Windows 10 coming out that this would address some of these issues but it doesn't. There doesn't seem to be any clear guides on using Mandatory Profiles on Windows 8.1 - 10 and they seem to be making it more awkarward to setup the profiles - with the sysprep copyprofile option rather then just being able to copy the profile to a share - I've never really found any clear documentation around what persmissions should be setup on the folders / files for users of the mandatory profile either. Microsoft seem keen to push roaming profiles - but I don't want to end up with 1000+ Roaming profiles sitting on my server for the pupils - I just want the same Mandatory profile for all my pupils which loads up nice and fast!!! Thanks, Matt Edited August 21, 2015 by mattpant
Moohorse Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 I think copyprofile in sysprep in Windows 10 build 10240 is still broken. We've been testing this all day. A fresh install from the DVD on the machine, going through the setup for a local account and then joining it to the domain manually works. Any user profile can log on and get a start menu, search and notification centre any time they log on. No sysprep, so no copyprofile. However, a fresh install put into audit mode, and then immediately sysprepping against an unattend.xml answer file that than turns on the local administrator account and sets a password with copyprofile=true doesn't behave the same way at all. After manually joining that to the domain, for any user profile that logs on, the start menu, search and notification centre don't work. Unless you blow away the profile entirely and delprof, and then for the first login, everything works fine. On any subsequent login, no start menu, search or notification centre. But - another fresh install, audit mode and immediately sysprepping against the unattend.xml WITHOUT copyprofile=true and everything was good again. Tried building the image and sysprepping without being connected to a network as detailed here: Windows 10 Image - Customize in Audit Mode with Sysprep - Page 12 - Windows 10 Forums but that doesn't seem to work here either. The only thing that seems to work is not having copyprofile in the unattend.xml file.
Peter56 Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 Yes I agree. Just tried running the sysprep without the copyprofile=true and the failing laptop is fine. I hope they fix this soon. The start menue look awfull as I have removed all the modern apps. Might have to start using GPO to add the shortcuts back in.
rinzwind Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 Hows the login experience with roaming profiles in Windows 10? Windows 8 was terrible with all those app setup stuff going on and on even if you went through it already on another pc.
robjduk Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 login is fine as long as you know what you are doing so no change from W8 really.
rinzwind Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 The problem was it was always busy with app setup (lots of data going every time to the local appdata etc). Ofcourse you can go ahead an remove everything app related but thats a bit rough.
rinzwind Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 And after reading the start menu doesnt roam issues (which really is a basic functionality) I think MS again did not look that much into the roaming profiles stuff... Which in itself is old and fragile technology but still has no alernative. Yes maybe MS azure accounts
Arthur Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 still has no alternative. There is an alternative. It's called UE-V.

Ofcourse you can go ahead an remove everything app related but thats a bit rough. From what I've tested on my virtual machine, even if you remove all of the provisioned apps from the image it's no quicker, but then it was a virtual machine.
