Things I'm sad I'm not watching: Amazon's adaption of the Culture novels

 

I'm incredibly sad this series is no longer happening. But at the same time, there's a tinge of relief. Of all the sci-fi universes, the Culture books leave the most to the reader's imagination.

Events happen over distances to vast to visibly comprehend. Or in fractions of time too tiny to effectly show to the viewer, even with gratuitous use of bullet time-esque slo-mo.

And I still cant think how they'd do ship Minds chatting across the galaxy, or hanging out in Infinite Fun Space.

But what is rubbish to one person is gold to another. I'd be surprised if (m)any on here have watched the sublime "Galavant" or even the more currently easy to access "Schmigadoon". More to the point, in the case of new Trek, most of those complaints would have been used by the same sort of people against the now inviolate "real" Trek had the internet been around in the day.

You thought old shows were good because you were young and stupid, and had yet to watch better shows.

 

Mushroom teleportation is still a stupid plot idea though.

I agree that they would be almost impossible to impart on screen. The communication between Minds reminds me of another novel series, the Cluster novels of Piers Anthony. Many of the opening paragraphs contain 'conversations' by intelligences with symbolic references as to who they are.

Enjoyed both this week's Treks, particularly DISCO. It reminded me of "Arrival" in some ways with the "How do we communicate?" plot. Am I reading too much into Tarka's motives? I don't see someone being willing to do all that for someone who is just a "friend", but they're being a bit coy about the relationship if they're in love. Also, does anyone know the reasons behind the disappearances of Tilly and Bryce beyond the in show ones?

Trese (Netflix) - A young woman (and her adopted demon siblings) stand as the defenders of a fragile alliance between many different demon species/clans, in a bid to keep everybody (and all of humanity) in balance - until a mysterious player starts making a move and toppling everything.

 

Netflix has been pushing this one kinda hard on me, and I was really hoping this was going to be an OG-Buffy-esque kind of deal, with the titular Alexandra Trese and her team having to figure out what each episode's big-bad was, and ultimately how to deal with it before it was too late. But it wasn't. Trese basically knows all of the answers straight away, and it's just a matter of execution. There's an over-arching plot, but it's barely mentioned in a lot of the episodes, until the final one. When suddenly, PLOT TWIST.. And then plot twist again!

 

Reasonably predictable, bad pacing, no tensions or stakes. Wouldn't recommend.

For those who love a good action show, the Amazon Reacher series is great: Jack Reacher, a veteran military police investigator, has recently entered civilian life when he is falsely accused of murder.

We watched the 2nd episode of Peaky Blinders last night

 

SO far that is 2 episodes and Mrs mikeprice hasn't said "Sex on Legs" once

I know what you mean, but there are plenty of acceptable contrivances that, done well, could work. Narration by a Mind to build the universe, the use of avatars for scenes involving Minds. Well choreographed mind-bending sfx for the interstellar stuff. Hell, an audio book with moving pictures.... If only they had a book store to sell that one on! Perhaps it is better that we wish for what could have been rather be disappointed with a poor adaption.

 

Meanwhile I'm watching Legend of Vox Machina while waiting for Daredevil to appear on Disney+ Then we'll be back on to Peaky Blinders and Killing Eve, with a side trip to Disco/Picard later on.

Meanwhile I'm watching Legend of Vox Machina

 

It's a beautifully put together series. I wished it could have been longer!

I've been slowly working my way through the critical role campaign that it's based on and they've done such a good job of adapting a plotline covering around 15 4-hour roleplay sessions into just a handful of half hour tv episodes.

Watched the first couple of episodes of Wolf Like Me on Amazon Prime last night.

 

 

Interesting, but it's a bit hard to nail down what it's supposed to be. Plus it suffers from the "Predator 2" problem of being structured like a mystery the audience doesn't know the solution to when its very title (+ trailer + title sequence etc) kinda gives the game away. It's also a bit odd that a show set in Australia has cast one of their own as a Yank.

Moon Knight seems very good after the first episode and Picard is getting better with each week... especially when Picard isnt in it.

I notice it was Lea Thompson's turn in front of the camera in Picard last week, while Jonathan Frakes took the directorial reins. Whilst Frakes can never be forgiven for ThunderFords, I do grudgingly respect the way he can adapt to the "house style". His episodes of New Trek are markedly different to those he's done in Next Next Generation The Orville.

The first season was definitely the best but things do go downhill, with some pretty dumb subplots. I did stick with it to the end of Season 8, though. I've never finished "Live Another Day" or started "Legacy".

Stop watching before they set off a nuke in a usa city just to give Bauer a motivation to go back to work.
