ht6 Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Looking for suggestions for an offsite backup solution. I want to set up a NAS in an offsite location (ie feeder primary), and backup to this NAS as additional to our current backup schema. The backup software should complete a full system state backup each night, and copy that as well as any changed files (so incremental) to the previously seeded NAS. That way we have a daily offsite backup. There’s a number of freeware solutions that do half of what I need, but I haven’t found one that can do the system state too – well, that’s a lie – Iperius can do it, and it’s a fair price, the only issue I’ve found is it needs to store a copy of the drive image locally as well as copying it up to the NAS. I need something that sends up the system state, and then scans the server and says “this has changed, send it to NAS. This has changed, send it too. This hasn’t changed so we’ll not waste bandwidth sending it”. We currently use Backup Exec 2012 for D2D2T, and this works well - wouldn't really be looking to replace BE2012, but something to add to our current backups to provide this next level. Cost is an issue to some degree, but willing to consider all options provided they do what I need. Many thanks,

ht6 Posted July 7, 2015 Author Posted July 7, 2015 There's some software called Iperius that does that Sted - it creates a local copy of a disk image and then syncs it over, but I don't want the local copy - it's an overhead that shouldn't be needed.

CloudBerry Lab Thanks, just had a play with that - it requires a local HDD (other than the one I'm backing up) to temporarily store data on. We don't have a spare, and don't want to bottleneck the network by choosing a network drive as we'd be looking to run it on multiple servers.

Achandler Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 How are you and the feeder school connected? Does the feeder school connection go via your school (some councils setup like this). If it is the case, you could configure your VLAN to extend into the feeder school to just the NAS box, thus creating a "network" area to backup too. Our VLAN is extended into our ISPs datacentre, which allows us to backup to a box that is offsite but appears on our network as per normal. Depends entirely on your ISP, internet connection etc and how much work others are willing to do to accomodate you.

I've wondered about the possibility of configuring the NAS as iSCSI though, that way the Backup Exec server could see it as a local drive - only issue with this is as far as I'm aware Backup Exec doesn't do delta (changed data only) so would be copying more data up across.

I don't think that they are costly. Because, at that time we made a lot of research to find an affordable solution. You can check their website (Online Backup & Recovery ) for more information. I think it is better to ask some advice from technical people. We did that before purchasing their service.
