We have a yearly ski trip here that comes to £1k+ each time. So £1650 ain't *that* bad.

 

Not a huge fan of it being run but it is a trip of a lifetime for some of the kids.

 

We do run all sorts of trips throughout the year though, so there's other things people can go on too.

We run Ski trips and trips to Barcelona etc.

Yeah, my last place did a tour for the volleyball team which covered 3 weeks - last week of term and 2 of the summer holidays. Cost the kids about a grand each (and the school about the same again for about 30 students, Heads pet project!!!) but it was a different European city every few days, training everyday and playing full matches twice a week gave a real feel for what being a pro athlete would be like.

We have a Latin trip that runs every 2 years to Italy and there isn't much much change out of a grand for that. However at least its pertinent to the subject - sports trip to Barbados however?

My old school has Rugby trips. A few years ago they were going to NZ for 3 weeks. I tried to convince them to take me (staff costs were paid by the school) as a Translator, but they weren't having any of it

Yes love, that's how money works. It sucks sometimes, but them's the grapes. If you no afford, you no can has. Looking at the price of it, and what they were planning to actually do whilst out there, the price of that trip (Read: Holiday) isn't unreasonable.

 

A week's half-board in an oceanfront hotel, organising sports events against local teams, "traditional evening entertainment" (whatever that means), a cruise, a water park, and having specialist sports equipment bought for them? Yeah. 1.5k sounds about right. So it's not like the school were going "We're going to get a coach to France. But let's charge 6 grand so the poor kids can't come."

 

Excessive? Yes. Un-needed? Probably. But the cost seems about right.

my school trip was to Manchester; overnight at Glossop YHA, cruise down the ship canal, survey of locals around Moss Side and a tour of Maine Road. Highlight was meeting Joe Corrigan. No idea how much it cost. No idea why it was on the agenda. Not sure if I learnt anything of worth.

 

Did get a week of "Army experience" at Bulford Camp. Not sure I'd call it a school trip. Think it was free (or rather the Army paid?). Far more enjoyable.

We run a biennial Sky trip, no idea how much it costs but we normally get around 20-30 people signed up so it can't be that expensive.

 

I guess with all these things you have to just consider the area you are in and how the price will impact signing up, clearly £1650 is too high for pretty much the entire student body and their families. I guess you would have to look at the trips they have run in the past to see how unreasonable it really was.
