Doc Who Xmas Special - what did you think ?

As a huge fan of Doctor Who - [ grown up on the stuff since I was a kid ] - I rather enjoyed the new stuff. My own kids too have enjoyed it. There have been some weak episodes [ the worst being the Daleks in Manhattan ] - but this one was really the biggest pile of sh1t ever.

 

It should have been called The Poseidon Adventure in space. I hope the new series is not going to be like this.

The only good part was the Queen comedy part - the rest was just very hard to watch. Anyone else thought it was weak ?

Have never watched any of the new Doctor Who at all. It just doesn't appeal to me at all. Now the new Battlestar Galactica series is a different matter.....

As you say, the Poseidon Adventure in space. I was expecting a swimming scene where the fat lady gets it.

 

The Hosts were reminiscent of the robots in 'Robots of Death' in the 70s (only in as far as their facial design).

 

Kylie was good. I thought she was very good. Possibly the only reason to watch? But they had to kill her off! It would've been great to have the three recent female companions appearing along with Kyle in the TARDIS. Ring side seats!

 

Some flimsy stories in the last series. As usual, involving a lot of running up and down corridors. Ridiculous Pig people! It's made for kids I suppose.

 

It needs some tension, passion and emotion and some really really nasty things happening.

Perhaps the Doctor needs a companion like Caprica (No.6) from Battlestar Galactica. Good, bad, evil. All wrapped up in one neat little package.

 

What we will get is some porky middle aged woman running about shouting for half a season.

I've only watched a few episodes of the new Dr Who but the ones I've seen all seem to be pretty much the same. They all seem rather rushed, they all have incredibly loud background music, at best the acting is hammy and they all seem to be incredibly badly written.

 

Maybe my expectations are too high, I dunno.

It seemed to focus on explosions and the like rather than an actual proper story line. Kinda like they were just having an end of year blowout and having some fun.

They filmed some scenes for Dr.Who in my home town earlier this year. I got to meet Mr. Tennant.

 

Some of the runners working on the show were gorgeous ;-)

Loved the build up at the begining to when the missiles struck and loved all the references to 70s' disaster movies.

 

(I remember me and my best mate going to cinema in Gateshead to watch Towering Inferno - and ordering some alcohol in the bar beforehand at age 15 (my mate was very tall and I was/am very old looking ))

 

And the end was OK.

 

It was just a bit boring in the middle at times.

 

 

The programme has to appeal to all ages so some bits aren't going to work for some people.

 

But worth sitting down for.

For once Rich i actually agree with you, Doctor Who is really not my cup of tea, in fact a lot of these so-called Kidult programmes and films such as Doctor Who and Harry Potter are complete and utter sh1te.

 

Russel T Davies and the Rowling woman get far too much credit for their substandard work, both the doctor and potter are in my opinion strictly for kids, with nothing of what i term an 'adult' element to them - there's no humour, no irony...and there is no plot or storyline to make up for it's deficiencies. I refuse to waste my time being a 'fan'. I don't get the fuss made by these middle-ages saddos who follow the DW tv series' and queue up to buy the potter books.

 

To see how fantasies should be done look no further than douglas adams and terry pratchett. I'd hesitate to call THGTG and the discworld books Kidult, as the 10 year olds who watch Doctor Who could not possibly appreciate the humour and originality.

 

The new battlestar gallactica series does intrique me. Although haven't ad the chance to cath any of it yet.

I though the exact same i was watching it and thinking some episodes are weak but for a christmas special the storyline was just so stupid.

A space cruisliner called the titanic from another planet, with people who dress as they from the original titanic.

I dont think any of the acting was that bad i just think the plot was very very poor.

I hope the next series offers better storylines.

As quite a fan to doctor who i have to say i was quite disapointed with the episode from yesterday. The whole queen thing i found annoying. I have to say i am not looking forward to the new assistant. We need another rose

Exactly, some of it is very adult. I would hazard a guess that kids won't understand half the humour or the complexities of his relationship with rose etc...

I agree that the plot line was very weak - for children or adults.

I know that the 'sciency' bit is always a bit wrong but this was nonsensical in parts.

And as it is still aimed at children I thought it was a shame to not let Astrid live - she could have decided to stay on Earth and not travel with the doctor. It seemed a bit much that all those people died (2000 he said, on a ship that big??) and the competitions winning couple and Kylie.

IMO all of the new Doctor Who episodes have been weak. Billy Piper was awful the other one I've forgotten already, and I shall definitely not be watching the new series with that insufferable Catherine "all I can do is shout and look stupid" Tate.

Both I and my teenage daughter thought it was very weak - lots of loose ends not properly tied up, lots of unexplained bits (like the young man who was shot seeming to recover without medical aid, and lasting a very long time before being rescued too!). Both of us biggish fans, but each series is a bit of a mixed bag - some very good and some rather poor. Sometimes it feels like they are more interested in how things look than in the content of the plot. But I guess that, with a lot of different writers involved, some episodes are going to appeal more than others.
