LosOjos Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 (edited) Unbelievably excited. I'm on my annual(ish) play through at the moment and was having my annual(ish) moan about it being overdue a remake the other night, so chuffed they're finally doing it It looks like it's going to be a total remake rather than just a graphics overhaul, which I'm in two minds about: on the one hand, fantastic, a new look at what I believe to be one of the absolute greatest video game story lines and universes ever written. On the other, I hope they don't change it too much - I don't need Cloud emo-ing up (which would be easy to do, given his story and style), I don't want them to change the battle system, I love classic JRPGs, the reason I don't play so many modern ones is I hate "action RPGs". Also hoping they don't mess with the materia system. Basically, FFVII is about as close as any game has come to perfect for me, so this is a bit of a double-edged sword - I'll still be pre-ordering whatever edition gives me the most release day content like a blabbering, money throwing buffoon though! EDIT: This won't be any less frustrating in glorious HD though : Edited June 16, 2015 by LosOjos
Irazmus Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 I'm the opposite, I'm not sure I see the point. While it's not my favourite JRPG (That accolade goes to either Grandia 2 or Tales of Vesperia [i bounce between the two]), I don't really see how you can improve on FF7. The story doesn't want changing, the battle system doesn't want changing, the world doesn't want changing, even the graphics are fine as is. Infact, with modern HD, ultra-realistic graphics I think it may lose some of its charm. All things considered I think it's much more likely they'll ruin it rather than improving on it, especially considering where the series has gone from 10 onwards. Leave well alone and spend that energy on designing a new game which can live up to the legacy of 7. Now where did I leave my Nomex suit ...

I'm bouncing between that and just sheer excitement at the possibilities... I love the original though, they'll never ruin that for me as I'll always have that. I'm really hoping that it's ultimately the same game, just with modernised graphics. As much as I love the original, that E3 reveal trailer sure is pretty...
X-13 Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 the reason I don't play so many modern ones is I hate "action RPGs". I'm happy for you, and I'ma let you finish... But Lightning Returns has the best battle system of all time. I think I'm the only one who likes it. FFX is good too. I like the option to take my time choosing the right attack... especially when you end up with a billion pages of spells. Also... I've never played FFVII. Not more than the first hour at least. So hyped for this.
ICTDirect_Dave Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 I think there's more that could do with it. I think Advent Children (well the BluRay edition for sure) took FFvii and improved on the concept. If they can bring the original up to that level whilst fleshing out some more of the story (they could do more with shinra and flesh out the towns and cities a little more) then I think It would be another masterpiece. I wouldn't mind a 'slight' tweaking of the combat system. A little more interactivity would be nice, even if it's as simple as hitting the trigger on the gunblade was in viii or likt ethe combat ring system from Lost Odyssey. I'd also like something to make magic relevant once you reach higher levels. After a point it was pretty pointless casting a spell or using a summon that wasn't Knights of the Round as you could set up your weapon/materia combo to give the same effect but without having to wait for the animation to finish. I'd also like leveled enemies, it got old getting into fights against monsters 50 levels lower than you during the late game. I love the original, more than any other game, but you could still make it betterer Also, think how scary they could make the Shinra mansion with a graphics update!
mrbios Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 Also... I've never played FFVII. Not more than the first hour at least. You've confessed your sin, it's now time for you to go and sit down and play FFVII for the rest of the week. Don't worry about work, you don't need that, you need to play FFVII all the way through, it's a life requirement! Oh if they're going to give the characters voices, i seriously hope morgan freeman does the voice of buganhagen

If they have to please let them be in Japenese. I can get behind that providing I'm still reading from a little blue box!

X-13 Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 If they have to please let them be in Japenese. I can get behind that providing I'm still reading from a little blue box! That'd be cool. Just not if it's like one of the XIIIs where it's paid DLC... That was dumb.
X-13 Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 There's a PC version.... The statement stands... because I totally don't get what you're implying.
sted Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 unsure about it. for one not got a ps4 and this isnt enough to change that. depends what they do with it a straight lets update the graphics im not sure as much as i love it im not sure i care enough to go through it again
LosOjos Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 (edited) ...you buying it for me? Otherwise I'm waiting for the PS4 remake. OK, got to say this because like a nerd, I'm feeling all protective over something I actually have zero involvement in other than playing it as a kid, falling in love with it and holding it dear like one of my own children; play the original! I've no idea what the PS4 remake will be like, it might be awesome, it might be trash but whatever it is, it will not be the original. You'll be doing yourself a great disservice if you base your opinion of the game on the remake. EDIT: if you have no other way of acquiring the game, it's on Steam at the moment, 50% off in the sale (£4.99) - may even drop lower than that if they flash sale it Edited June 17, 2015 by LosOjos

Tesla Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 I just hope they actually have proper magic spell names, not fire1, fire2 and fire3 etcetc I don't *just* hope that, but you know what i mean.
LosOjos Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 does it actually work on a modern pc I remember buying the pc version back in the day and it iirc required a voodoo card Yeah well the Steam version does anyway; Square made a few tweaks for the Steam version, including joypad support, cloud saves and achievements. They also made some minor graphical tweaks; nothing that you'd immediately notice, just tweaks to make it look a bit smoother on higher res modern monitors.

Haha yeah never really got why they did that, earlier FF games used "-e, -a, -aga" naming rather than numbers (e.g. Fire, Fira, Firaga). Also, it'll make my inner nerd very happy if they call Aeris Aerith this time around
mrbios Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 does it actually work on a modern pc I remember buying the pc version back in the day and it iirc required a voodoo card it does indeed! I've also played the not so legitimate non-steam version before the steam version was available, and even that works a treat.

mrbios Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 ...and there's always the emulated PSX route. No excuses! The emulated PSX route can also be made to look quite nice with the graphical enhancements some of the emulators provide. FFX in particular can be made to look better than some PS3/360 games with the graphical enhancements of todays PS2 emulators..........but i don't know any of that, purely speculation of course

You can also take advantage of a number of excellent mods that improve the overall graphical quality without changing any of the gamplay Edit: I've also enjoyed playing my original discs on my macbook pro with a little emulation. Only problem is the sound. It's not quite right, you don't get that satisfying sound when you nail a Deathblow with Cloud Edited June 17, 2015 by ICTDirect_Dave

Only problem is the sound. It's not quite right, you don't get that satisfying sound when you nail a Deathblow with Cloud That looks awesome. I'm actually really tempted to get that version on Steam now despite having no real reason to play it again for a while (got WoWS and Skyrim to play more of first). I finally watched the trailer last night and the voice over and general feel of it suggests that's not a true remake and more likely set between 7 and AC, talk of the calm and not being able to forget the Star was the main thing that makes me think that. I'd love a FF7-2 game as a true sequel.
BKGarry Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 its ok @X-13 I have never played FF-VII either as I wasn't allowed game consoles (that changed as soon as I started earning money). The first one I played was FF-X, which I purchased the HD remaster, but I am stuck at the moment, as I never completed it when I had it on PS2 either, so I cannot rely on remember tactics from before. I am about to back track to the calm lands and spend several hours tonight just walking around and levelling as much as possible.
