I finally watched the trailer last night and the voice over and general feel of it suggests that's not a true remake and more likely set between 7 and AC, talk of the calm and not being able to forget the Star was the main thing that makes me think that. I'd love a FF7-2 game as a true sequel.

I was thinking along those lines but I also could see how the voice other could be talking about the technical demo being the "bright shinning star" and the calm is the time between then and now, but at this point with the information we have both could be possible.

That looks awesome. I'm actually really tempted to get that version on Steam now despite having no real reason to play it again for a while (got WoWS and Skyrim to play more of first).

I thought the same, but it quite clearly says "Remake" at the end - if it is a proper remake, that gives them a lot of freedom to flesh out and even expand the story though. Could be a whole new game, just with the same characters and based on the original story. I mean you never hear of Shinra soldiers storming houses in the original, but you see that in the new trailer.

I think that may well be what they're doing, but I hope they keep in key elements - won't mention them because unbelievably there are people who haven't played it :p but some of the key plot points need to be kept if they're still calling it FFVII

isn't there a cut scene/flashback when youre near the genova reactor where they do exactly that (its been a while)

Don't think so - I mean it's implied that they're cracking down on AVALANCHE, but that's largely by way of keeping them in the slums. I may be wrong - my memory isn't great (at least it means I enjoy the game every time I play through because I forget some of the things that happen every time :p)

I just rewatched the video to see, and yeah I was also thinking it could be by one of the reactors

It could be a reactor, but this scene just before you see them marching up the stairs (presumably in the same place) looks like it could be the Sector 7 slums to me:

earlier FF games used "-e, -a, -aga" naming rather than numbers (e.g. Fire, Fira, Firaga).

It took me way too long to fully understand that when some suffixes mean AoE/multi-target...

Also, there's sometimes a -ja suffix for tier 4.

And sometimes -ra gets skipped so -ga is tier 2 of a specific spell, but equivalent to tier 3 of a different one.

:censored: JRPGs being so complex!

In original FFVII, they're just numbered - another reason for you to love it ;)

I want there to be 1 of each skill and it just levels up the more you use it. [Like the job system, if I understood it properly]

Having, for example, fire 1, 2 and 3 when I'm just going to use fire 4 every time is annoying when you're dealing with as many skills as you usually get in a FF game. Doubly so when its ATB... I like taking my time.

This looks like sector 7 to me, though I'm sure i remember that water tower from sector 5.

But fire 3 costs 50+ Mp when fire 2 only costs 24 and will often do the job against minor opponents. I like having the full range.

Likewise the cure materia has four levels, the third of which is regen which is one of the most useful spells in the game. I'd rather that wasn't replaced completely by cure 3.

99,999 damage on jobbers, though.

I didn't know Cure 3 was regen... I'm used to regen being it's own materia or a passive.

Materia system was the best IMO. Simple to use but complicated to really master. Slot your abilities and link them with stuff like Element which will add that element to your attacks or resistance depending on where you slot it. Or add control effects to provide immunity to petrify, toxic, etc. You could even reflect or grant immunity to your own healing spells. One exploit cast a Holy(All) spell on your own team with Reflect up to cast it three times at the enemy!

I liked Crisis Core's system. You could combine materia to get something different and add stat bonuses to it as well.

The progression for restore materia is: Cure 1 -> Cure 2 -> Regen -> Cure 3

Yeah, so keep regen as it's own thing and make cure 1 improve to cure 3.

Bear in mind, this game was made before it was common place to allow you to save progress whenever you feel like it. Working through a dungeon with a boss battle at the end, you don't want to burn through all your MP using outrageously overpowered spells. Ether/elixir are rare drops and expensive to buy too, so you won't likely have huge reserves. It really makes you strategize.

Also, you can turn ATB off and then it's a true turn based battle system if you prefer - I tend to do that when I know I'm entering a tougher section of the game but leave ATB on when I'm just wandering

You can only do 9,999 in one go in FFvii

Yeah in 7 the Restore materia had four levels (Cure, Cure 2, Regen, Cure 3). When linked with an all materia it was up there with Barrier (Barrier, MBarrier, Wall) as most useful defensive spell. Well untill you could get big guard/white wind enemy skills that is.

I had a lovely combo for taking on Ruby weapon.

Knights of the round (KOTR) with Magic counter (both mastered), KOTR with HP Absorb (Both Mastered), KOTR with MP Absorb. Then Revive with Final Attack (both mastered).

I could start the fight with just cloud alive (the only way to avoid an instakill), go for my tea and every time Ruby smacked me I'd do 13 x 9,999 damage in return and gain back all of my HP/MP from the absorb materia. If i ever did die I'd simply bring myself back on full life and then smack him with another KOTR :)

i've only ever completed ff7 story once, played through it numerous times, but only completed story once, i tend to forget about playing it, my current playthrough (that i havent touched for about a year) I am exploring the ship that's underwater..

That makes it sound like "oh, that's easy" - but mastering all those materia must have taken forever!

Triple Growth in the north cave on magic pots give you around 6,000 AP per fight. It tooks some time but twas worth it.

Also if you link master summon to one of the support materia it will always use the best summon you have MP for, in this case KOTR :)

I'm bouncing between that and just sheer excitement at the possibilities... I love the original though, they'll never ruin that for me as I'll always have that.

I'm really hoping that it's ultimately the same game, just with modernised graphics. As much as I love the original, that E3 reveal trailer sure is pretty...

You are certainly not the only one excited over this, I've seen Game panels go mad when this trailer was shown (their live reactions were priceless).

Twitter also hit a meltdown and the Youtube video has been seen A LOT, last I checked it had 6 million hits compared to the other high ones of 1.5million.

Little info has been given, I've seen that they are not just redoing the graphics - that is important. I want better music, if they do voices they have to be better than Advent Children, I don't particularly want any other changes but a few more Story tweaks to add that "Surprise factor" would be nice.

Still.... either way I think I will love it just as much as the original. People always say it wont be the same but to me what did I really love?

Music - I loved nearly every tune it had.

Story - Sublime, Small group against a Corporation (perfect 1997 period too) and then the big bad guy who wants to destroy the world - Perfect!

Characters - Loved them all except Cait Sith! But luckily enough he didn't really play a major part often for me. Special mention to Sephiroth who to me is the Darth Vader of Star Wars.

Extras - There was a galore of these and the game didn't feel linear.

As long as they don't ruin the music/graphics and remove the extras or characters I think I will love it even more so than the original. What I didn't like about FF7 was the sprites used for the characters outside of the battles. Some of the cutscenes even used the sprites.. giant hands... big head and small body..

Still... totally excited and this game is now on my top number 1 list of wants for a game by a mile.

Yeah the extras need to say, and crucially the world map needs to still be there. Getting out of Midar for the first time and suddenly realising that there was a whole world to explore was one of the highlights of the game for me.

I also hope they make a new version of this trailer. It was so epic I just had to get the game :)

Oh yes... updated music too. This was the first game trailer I was like WOW. First time I saw this it was on a PS Gaming mag CD and fell in love with it right away.

FF7 wasn't my first FF, it was my 3rd but it was instantly in my top 3 after 1 hour. Something not many games did in the space of 10 years. I wasn't even a heavy gamer back in those days.

Just excuse me while I emotionally prepare my self for that..... death.. again the first ever death that felt like a "Movie" death of O.. M.. G.

I will make sure she is out at that time because in 4 years, she has yet to see a single tear out of my eye.
