The WWDC Video for whats new in iOS 9 from an MDM perspective is on the WWDC App (Download it on iPad or iPhone , press Videos and its very far down the list.

 

 

Biggest points are, they have publicly said no Apple ID's required, new Apple Configurator 2, option to stop kids changing Wallpaper, Passcode and Device Name.

 

Worth a watch of the whole video.

What they should implement in an educational environment:

Impero like solution so that teachers can control the devices and look at all screens remotely from their PC or Mac

Remote access to the iPads file structure for easy transfer of files from the iPad to a computer for the teachers

Ability to completely disable the Settings app or individual settings menus.

Apple really do listen to feedback. I used it once about Profile Manager last year Apple got in contact.

 

This year i emailed Tim Cook saying there is still more needed for Managing iPads and listed things such as Wallpapers being changed by kids, and the pain of Apple ID's. What happened? I get contacted by the Director for education for Apple by email saying he will get some Senior Engineers to contact me, then have a conference call with them to talk about my email to Tim and the issues i highlighted. Hence i've known for ages Apple IDs are going (but was told in confidence by them so had to keep quiet on it) and other things i wished for have been addressed in iOS 9.

 

Honestly use the feedback forms to get your opinions to them, they are not just trashed.

Pleased we had a member of the SLT with some common sense who decided after our trial of these overpriced paper weights not to purchase for staff, saved a fortune and never looked back.

 

They are only for personal use and unless they are a whole school deployment for both staff and students then they require to much money and time to adopt.

Ever tried Hancomm Office Suite!? it's an amazing word processing tool and comes free with any Samsung Galaxy device under Galaxy Gifts. I'd say it's just as good if not slightly better than Microsoft Office. Get a cheap bluetooth mouse and keyboard and I've found I no longer need a laptop. I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 (rooted). There's also an app called XHaloFloatingWindow that runs on an exposed module which allows you to open apps in a Window and I regularly have multiple apps going at one time. A 50p USB OTG cable to plug in USB drives and the like, jobs a goodun.

 

Great bit of kit, the need for a laptop for me has completely gone out of the window. Of course though I have a gaming desktop at home.

And generally make MDM work full stop. Its shocking.

 

Anyway they're probably too busy making the latest iTrouser Press to worry about after sales development.

Now Apple need to do something with the Calendar and Reminder apps to stop the students setting random alarms on the things. From my point of view, just allow us to get rid of the apps.

I currently manage using configurator and syncing trolleys, but thinking about getting a proper MDM as we've now got rather too may iPads for me to run around plugging them into configurator all the time.

Something like Meraki where you can push Apps out through the cloud.

 

At the minute, if you only have Meraki set up and no Apple configurator, youcan push the App out, but not silently, it prompts for a password, whereas I assume now, it'll all be able to be done silently!

Oh right - nice! Yeah we have Meraki for the staff and student iPads. Have recently experimented with pushing apps to the staff ipads who use their own apple id's, so that would be brilliant if I can just carry on using Meraki and push apps to all the student ones. No need for an expensive MDM!

Sounds like there will be no massive need for Apple Configurator too now!

It means you can assign apps to devices instead of Apple IDs like you do at the moment. So if they are on an MDM you can in theory just highlight the devices and install an app to them over the air without needing an Apple ID signed on on the devices iTunes Store settings.

Yeah I may be able to stop using it. Will have to wait and see about this no Apple ID thing, and then give it a whirl with Meraki and silent push with the student iPads.

 

On another note - I heard Cisco were going to start charging for Meraki Systems Manager. Is that still the case?

Apparently they have done for a while if you have over 100 devices I think
