Hi all,

Looking to make the bedroom PC a smart TV!

Fire TV Stick

Amazon Fire TV Stick

Google Chromecast

Google Chromecast HDMI Streaming Media Player: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

Roku 3500

Roku 3500EUA Streaming Stick for TV: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

Not sure which to get? Anyone got one? I will be mainly using this for NetFlix.

Some of these devices I can control with an App?

Cheers

I have 2 chromecasts - one in the upstairs and downstairs TVs, decent devices work well with chrome and have paid for themselves in the freebies from google to date (Had over £40 in credit for £30 spends on both)

Can you control your Chromecast with an App on your phone?

Depends what you mean by control? but you can certainly cast from your phone to your chromecast using various apps local cast works well in conjunction with other apps.

I have a chromecast. It does what it says on the tin. Works really well. However you need to have Chomecast compatible apps, Chrome is obviously one of them.

However if i'm casting a browsing session session I lose the mouse on the TV which is annoying.

I also assumed I could access the net as a whole from it, but it's turns out you can do that only from the few apps available, you should be OK if you only want Netflix, youtube, amazon etc.

I'm going to buy an android player for my next one so I can load up Kodi (XBMC) and stream from that too. It's just so much more versatile.

Chromecast is excellent for using specific apps like youtube, google music and netflix (many others) to stream content. Streaming films or anything without a netflix (or whatever) account could be an issue.

You can stream local files too!

Dedicated remote and free mobile app for easy use—With the Amazon Fire TV Stick Remote (included) or the free app for your Android and iOS phones and tablets, you have all the controls you need to easily search, navigate and play games

Can you use your phone / tablet as a remote for this?

Still not entirely sure what your looking to do, with the chrome cast your essentially streaming whatever is on your phone so in that sense I guess it's like a remote control (you can play, pause, adjust volume, change film etc from your phone) if your looking for an app to make your phone a remote for your TV whilst not using your chrome cast I believe you can get an app but couldn't recommend one as I have no experience of that.

I love the Roku stick and it does all of the usual VOD services and catch up stuff.

But I think it's currently nudged of its perch now by the Fire TV stick especially as you can sideload Kodi onto it and watch Panamanian shopping channels in the middle of the night if you're that way inclined.

I definitely prefer the firestick myself (have both a Chromecast and a stick) - mainly as the phone app allows you to replace the remote and actually control the interface directly. I always found using the Chromecast rather clunky in comparison, and now mainly use it for presentations so I can throw up slides from the phone.

I like Roku - that's what I have. But can't get Amazon TV stuff on it which is frustrating - as you can on the US Roku. Apparently something to do with Sky owning 20% of Roku so...
