Monkey123 Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 Hi, We've got around 100 iMacs/Macbooks in school and need to replace our very old Xserve and RAID. Thinking of buying a high spec mac mini with thunderbolt 2 storage. Can anyone think of any issues (apart from the drive not being RAID)? The Mac network is not used extensively so it will very rarely take a battering. Interested to know your thoughts. Thanks Simon

Internally, you're correct - to get any sort of RAID on the latest Mac Mini you need to have the SSD option fitted (M2) then you can add a SATA drive. Alternatively, you could buy an older model (pre late 2014) which is very easy to add a second HDD to (just upgraded a bunch of 2011 models to SSD - takes about five minutes. Kits on Ebay include a second SATA cable for this purpose). You'll keep Thunderbolt (from 2011), and you gain performance and upgradeability as the new models are rather hamstrung as servers.
