Profiles

So, we're looking into how we do profiles for our accounts and want to know other opinions.

 

We currently have roaming profiles, but I've seen some places do mandatory for pupil accounts?

 

Could anyone advise with some advantages/disadvantages to these?

Local profiles with all but appdata redirected

Local for staff and roaming for students. Seems to work fine

We have local for staff with redirected folders for desktop, startmenu and documents. Students have mandatory profiles that seem to work quite well for our needs.

Mandatory here for absolutely everyone with the exception of head & head's PA.

Positives: log on speeds, security, noone saving in places they shouldn't be, noone filling their profiles with gigabytes of crud.

Negatives: Doesn't play nicely with full Outlook client, hence why head & PA have roaming profiles.

 

Desktops redirect, students just see a couple of vital bits on theirs, staff have the addition of SIMS and helpdesk.

Start menus redirect also to relevant staff and student start menus.

Super mandatory for pupils with redirected AppData, provides a good mix of speed with personalisation.

 

"Super-mandatory user profiles are similar to normal mandatory profiles, with the exception that users who have super-mandatory profiles cannot log on when the server that stores the mandatory profile is unavailable."

 

Local profiles for teachers and admin staff, with lots of redirection again. Keeps some of the profile dross off the servers (like temp files). I sometimes use a script or GP to clear these - nothing of importance is stored in them.

Nope. Signatures for us are placed automatically by the email server so not an issue.

Same here.

Can make a VPN and bit sluggish but hey.

 

You at least need to folder redirect My Docs and Desktop otherwise logon will take an age.
