Happy Birthday Edugeek!

I joined in Dec 2008 when I first started as a Network Manager. Its been a lifeline since day one for me and many others. Long may it continue.

my sign up date is 2 days later! You guys have done an awesome job since then.

 

Well, I only set it up because I was told I couldn't expand the LCC techies forum for those in other LEAs :)

And then I got in trouble for it!!

I joined in 2007 just before BETT. It's saved my life at work endless times.

 

Not everyone feels the same though. I have several witnesses to a conversation on the last afternoon at BETT this year... paraphrased below.

 

Random bloke walks up to me, points at Edugeek sign and says to me "Don't see the point"

 

Me, somewhat bemused, "Oh!"

 

Him "Well there's nothing useful. People just argue all the time"

 

Me "I'm sorry you feel like that. I'm one of the moderators and we work very hard to keep things civil. Most people say the site is a life- saver."

 

Him "And anyway. If I need to know anything I just go on the manufacturers websites for it"

 

Me (losing the will to live and thanking deities he isn't a member) "Well most people join because what they need isn't on the manufacturer sites or isn't accurate, but if it works for you..."

Heh, yeah, he wanted it in arabic. And it was so small back than too!

It's a shame Google Translate wasn't out back then, I'm sure we could have rigged something up :)

Following on from @elsiegee40 , I joined a few weeks after EG started ... mainly because one of the newsgroups went very quiet ... turns out that some of the techie regulars had started to investigate a new forum. I think it was @Roberto that pointed me over here ... And the first person I spotted was @russdev.

How did everyone else discover EG?

I spotted the stand in the advance paperwork for BETT and realised it was exactly what I needed... access to people who knew things I didn't. I went to BETT but was too terrified to introduce myself at the stand - I did that the following year.

I think I stumbled upon it when looking for the answer to a problem

I can't remember what it was now.

I think that it's safe to say that there are moments of... drama here but considering the size of the forum, that's to be expected. A community this size is never going to be in complete agreement all off the time. I think the most useful aspect of this site is that educational IT is a relatively unique niche inside the sector and it's always useful to chew the fat with people who are in a similar situation to you, whether it's to work out a problem or just to have a bit of a moan.

 

As for how I found this site, I was asking about software restriction policies on another forum that I'm a member of. One of the members there said something along the lines of that I shouldn't be trying to use them because they make people's life harder. I said that they should try working in a school where it was the average students singular mission to cock computers up as much as humanely possible. @Geoff saw that post and referred me here.

I joined around the same time as you Tony. I vaguely remember the newsgroup and used that on and off. April 2005 was when I got my first real IT job, in a school of all places, so newsgroups and forums were very much a life-line back then. I think there was another forum called 'schooltechnicians.co.uk' or something similar (that I thought was better at the time :o). I found Edugeek when I was doing a Google search for that other site and this came back on the search results. Edugeek got better very quickly, and that other site disappeared off the face of the planet along with the usenet groups.

I think EduGeek is astonishingly civil. How many pages did we manage in the General Election thread without it ever getting locked? I can't think of a more welcoming, less trolly community in 15 odd years of loitering in unsavoury corners of the internet.

 

I only found my way here through Googling an answer. Think it only took me as long as it did because the site was blocked as a forum at my first school. I found it within 11 days of starting this job :)

Its still there Schooltechnician.co.uk but not as a forum.

I think I got shown the forum by a colleague when I was a mere apprentice at my first proper job. I used to spend a lot of time answering questions on Yahoo answers, so this was the next level I guess!!

There are always strange conversations at BETT ... like the time a Saudi Prince wanted to buy EduGeek ... If Chris could get it all translated!

Well, i was working at this school, and this trusted friend / advisor from a nearby school used to pop by and visit from time to time and kept telling me about this amazing resource, so i lurked for a bit, and then after plenty of haranguing i eventually wanted to post, so signed up, and have never looked back.
