Andrew_C Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 (edited) Mentioned in the General Election thread, there is a much more worthwhile poll running; choosing a new national bird. Let's see what the Geeks' favourite is... We might need this to run a bit longer than the official poll, which closes tonight. Edited May 7, 2015 by elsiegee40
Andrew_C Posted May 7, 2015 Author Posted May 7, 2015 Nice how the Kingfisher bar is sort of kingfisher blue...
spookyspoof Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 Voted. Difficult to choose though. me too - a bit like the general election! a couple on here are my favs that I see daily...
Dos_Box Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 Still deciding as there is a good selection there! And I'm off to RSPB Bempton at the end of the month to see the Puffins
Andrew_C Posted May 7, 2015 Author Posted May 7, 2015 see the Puffins Mrs C thinks they are mythical. We honeymooned in Iceland, and didn't see one!
Davit2005 Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 Glad to see the Robin is close to the top. I notice you haven't got Pigeon, crow or seagull in the list
localzuk Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 Mrs C thinks they are mythical. We honeymooned in Iceland, and didn't see one! Got em around the coast of the Calf of Man - saw some when I lived over there (on the IOM, not the Calf).
Dos_Box Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 Mrs C thinks they are mythical. We honeymooned in Iceland, and didn't see one! I've never seen them either. We went last year but missed them by a week or so. I voted for the barn owl. Saw a cracking one flying down a farm track in front of my car in the winter. It then flew back past us about 10 feet away. Amazing looking bird to see in the wild
36Degrees Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 And I'm off to RSPB Bempton at the end of the month to see the Puffins I remember Bempton very well due to seeing Puffins there! I can't decide either. We have a lot of blue tits, several blackbirds, 2 robins and a wren living in or around our garden so see them on a daily basis. One of the blackbirds appears as soon as the curtains open in a morning as my wife puts mealworms down for him just outside our conservatory.
Andrew_C Posted May 7, 2015 Author Posted May 7, 2015 Amazing looking bird to see in the wild The field* I used to walk my dog around was the hunting ground for a pair. I used to spend hours watching them, the highlight was when they were teaching a chick to hunt. *Now more housing for the inexorable tide of people moving south.
LiamH Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 (edited) Tough choice, should add a few more birds of prey to the list, no Peregrine Falcons or Sparrowhawks? I know they tend to get around a bit more though. Edited May 7, 2015 by LiamH
Andrew_C Posted May 7, 2015 Author Posted May 7, 2015 The ten on my list are those on the "official" poll. I didn't know about it until a day or so ago.
DCUK6 Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 (edited) The ones I see in spain whilst walking along the beach. These are more red tits than blue. Sorry, Had a robin in our local church for months. We got it out a few times but it would get back in again. Apparently it used to come down during services and sing along to the hymns. No nest was ever found. Edited May 8, 2015 by DCUK6 1
Andrew_C Posted May 15, 2015 Author Posted May 15, 2015 Poll closes Sunday. Robin, and by far the best British bird, the Barn Own are neck-and-neck.
featured_spectre Posted May 15, 2015 Posted May 15, 2015 I'd vote for the sparrowhawk as I've seen them in my garden loads and they keep pests at bay here
GuyJD Posted May 15, 2015 Posted May 15, 2015 All round South London we get a lot of Parakeets, rumor has it that someone got fed up breeding them in their aviary and just let them all go one day and they've just thrived ever since, I must admit it is nice to look out the window and see bright green birds sitting in the trees.
synaesthesia Posted May 15, 2015 Posted May 15, 2015 I couldn't see an option for Kelly Brook though I like robins though.
sonofsanta Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 At last: proof that we on EduGeek are the keepers of all knowledge and wisdom and we should scrap this democracy lark and save everyone all that time and effort by just coming to us for a decision instead. As in our poll above, the robin won: Robin tops poll to find UK's 'national bird' - BBC News 1
