Britain's Favourite Bird

Mentioned in the General Election thread, there is a much more worthwhile poll running; choosing a new national bird. Let's see what the Geeks' favourite is...

 

We might need this to run a bit longer than the official poll, which closes tonight.

Got em around the coast of the Calf of Man - saw some when I lived over there (on the IOM, not the Calf).

I've never seen them either. We went last year but missed them by a week or so.

I voted for the barn owl. Saw a cracking one flying down a farm track in front of my car in the winter. It then flew back past us about 10 feet away. Amazing looking bird to see in the wild

I remember Bempton very well due to seeing Puffins there!

 

I can't decide either. We have a lot of blue tits, several blackbirds, 2 robins and a wren living in or around our garden so see them on a daily basis. One of the blackbirds appears as soon as the curtains open in a morning as my wife puts mealworms down for him just outside our conservatory.

Amazing looking bird to see in the wild

The field* I used to walk my dog around was the hunting ground for a pair. I used to spend hours watching them, the highlight was when they were teaching a chick to hunt.

Tough choice, should add a few more birds of prey to the list, no Peregrine Falcons or Sparrowhawks? I know they tend to get around a bit more though. Edited May 7, 2015 by LiamH

The ones I see in spain whilst walking along the beach. These are more red tits than blue.

Had a robin in our local church for months. We got it out a few times but it would get back in again. Apparently it used to come down during services and sing along to the hymns. No nest was ever found.

I'd vote for the sparrowhawk as I've seen them in my garden loads and they keep pests at bay here

All round South London we get a lot of Parakeets, rumor has it that someone got fed up breeding them in their aviary and just let them all go one day and they've just thrived ever since, I must admit it is nice to look out the window and see bright green birds sitting in the trees.

At last: proof that we on EduGeek are the keepers of all knowledge and wisdom and we should scrap this democracy lark and save everyone all that time and effort by just coming to us for a decision instead.
