Last year we had to upgrade to SQL2012, which we did.

Now being told that we need to upgrade to SQL2014 for the SIMS Autumn 2015 update!

So my question is if we are already on SQL2012, do we need to 'Rush' to upgrade to SQL2014?

Many Thanks in Advance

Paul

Where has that info come from?

The last technical roadmap said Support for SQL 14 commenced in Autumn 2014.

SQL 12 support is green right through to Spring 16 which is as far as the table goes at the moment.

Based on that, no need to rush, in fact it's worth waiting to see what issues people have. There seem to have been speed problems for those that have gone to SQL 2014

Interesting. Our LA has told us it needs to be done *for* the Spring 2016 release.

They are also charging for the upgrade (£65) which is odd as they have never charged before.

Hi Paul,

No, according to Capita SupportNet article 17910 (SIMS Technical Roadmap (UPDATED 30/06/14)) :

SQL 2008 and 2008R2 support ends Summer 2015

SQL 2012 support doesn't end any time soon (no end date listed yet)

SQL 2014 support was only introduced on Autumn 2014 and no end date listed.

We are on SQL 2012 and we have no plans to upgrade yet! Please don't just take my word for it though, have a look on SupportNet for yourself!!

I would advise holding off on the migration SQL 2014. There appears to be a speed issue once you migrate, so it has been reported by some L.A.'s......

Some people have had some success by changing the compatibility in management studio back down to SQL 2012, others have not.

At software update in London last Thursday Jeremy did say developers and a software architect are looking into it at present.

Sounds like lea is fishing for business and want you to be a pilot for any bugs. No need to do it whilst you are 2012. The capita roadmap has 2012 supported for the foreseeable future. Sql 2008 r2 supports ends with the summer release this year where 2014 is supported from I think summer this year. Unless you want to have a play with 2014 in a testing environment stick with 2012 for your live environment for a couple years. Technical road maps can be requested from capita or downloaded off their support website

Is it worth just upgrading to 2012 then this summer if we are still on 2008?

I would - to keep up with support, without doing anything too risky.

Latest update from Capita:

SIMS SQL 2014 - Important Update

Slow performance issues in SIMS after migrating to SQL 2014

26/03/2015

What’s the issue?

We are aware of some customers experiencing slow SIMS performance after migrating from SQL server 2008 or SQL server 2008R2 to SQL server 2014.

What do you recommend?

We have had further feedback relating to our suggestion to place the SIMS database in compatibility mode 110 (SQL 2012 mode) using patch ID 20580. This fix has not been effective for all customers.

We are advising anyone considering a migration to SQL2014 to postpone it until we are able to confirm the issues and offer further guidance. Customers can still choose to migrate to SQL2012 as a supported platform.

We are continuing to investigate the issue with Microsoft and we will provide an update as soon as possible.
