sted Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 has anyone else got these and if so is the wireless utter bobbins as ive got 6 here and just installing Sophos on them is taking ages
Roberto Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 I've got one personally and while I think its a bargain for what it is, the wireless being poor is just one of the reasons I wouldn't allow it within 10 miles of being used as a classroom device. Lovely idea for a budget personal device mind you, but totally unsuitable for professional use of any kind imo.
sted Posted March 12, 2015 Author Posted March 12, 2015 at least its not me though I suspect the netgear wifi here isn't helping got my usb to nic adapter out but still got another 12 to setup at some point
VeryPC_Colin_M Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 has anyone else got these and if so is the wireless utter bobbins as ive got 6 here and just installing Sophos on them is taking ages I think those Linx devices are utter bobbins full stop chap and aren't doing the rep of Windows tablets any good at all.
witch Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 I've got one at home and it is really good. I have no issues with the wireless at all and can connect from further away than my laptop can. Whether it is OK for a network I wouldn't like to say but to say they are "utter bobbins" is not true AFAIC
localzuk Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 What sort of speeds are people seeing via the wireless? Home use is very different to network use, as we know. They might connect at a good distance but if they're only connecting at 5Mbps that doesn't bode well for a domain environment.

And you can quote me on that LOL. Linx tablets at home though? Don't know as having had them in the office here, my experience was nothing like your positive affirmation there @witch. I found it be as useful as a chocolate teapot, which is why we don't sell them.

simpsonj Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 Considering their price, I quite like them. Sophos took about 8-10 minutes to install (not great, but overly slow either) and given the choice between using these, an Android device or iPads in a classroom, I would go with these. That said, I wouldn't be in a rush to put them out there. They only really become useful with a case/keyboard combination, and I can see those going missing, or being broken at a rapid pace. I will be using them as a student take home device (for students who have no access to IT at home etc) and I think (hope!) they'll be really useful for that purpose.

Depends on how you want to use them - they can't join a domain IIRC, which negates a big advantage of Windows, they don't support booting from an Ethernet socket plugged into the USB OTG port which limits your ability to manage deployments... Wonderful budget home tablet. Woeful 'business-class' choice (and I should say in their defence, I don't see the manufacturer positioning them as anything other than a home device).
penfold Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 My experience is the same as @witch. Very impressed for what I've used it for.

They can if you get the ones with the Pro version of Windows on them, or install it yourself. Most deployment softwares allow boot from USB stick (SCCM can, Ghost can, etc...). So, not perfect but not terrible.
Roberto Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 They can if you get the ones with the Pro version of Windows on them, or install it yourself. Hadn't seen an option to get a linx with Pro installed - clearly this would fix the domain issue. Most deployment softwares allow boot from USB stick (SCCM can, Ghost can, etc...). So, not perfect but not terrible. Yes, we use SCCM but we don't regard deployment from USB memory stick as a viable model.
localzuk Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 Hadn't seen an option to get a linx with Pro installed - clearly this would fix the domain issue. I believe they're an Insight exclusive. Yes, we use SCCM but we don't regard deployment from USB memory stick as a viable model. It really depends how often you're going to be re-imaging them. With them being tablets, they'll always make their way back to your desk to image, so the difference ends up being plugging a USB stick in or plugging an ethernet lead in. Realistically, workflow is very similar.
LeMarchand Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 I believe they're an Insight exclusive. Novatech have offered to demo one, so I'm hoping they're not exclusive to Insight!
localzuk Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 Novatech have offered to demo one, so I'm hoping they're not exclusive to Insight! I'm going by what was said by someone on here a couple of months ago. Might've changed, or just been wrong in the first place.
simpsonj Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 Got my demo unit from Academia, and it's definitely the Pro version as it's sat on my domain!
matt40k Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 which is why we don't sell them. The cynic in me would say that could because they are so cheap there isn't much room for profit and you wouldn't resell something you couldn't profit, but that's just the cynic I think if you treat it as a tablet is ok, is no worse\better then an android\ipads (except in the case of the ipad, its a qtr of a price). If you treat it as a laptop of course it's goanna be pants! RE: network performance, it's got 32gb space, I think that's gonna be more of a bottleneck then wifi !!
jaminben Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 We got a couple now... installed our image and its on the domain no probs. Works fine for Office, browsing, research etc.... keyboard is pretty pants but not had any issues with the wireless (logins are quicker than our older Windows 7 machines). As a cheap research device they are ideal.
10101010 Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 no rugged case for them or a dual band wireless card are the reasons they can't even be considered for a classroom environment. Great little product for my department though - really handy to be able to use impero/helpdesk etc whilst on the move around the school.

Mate, I sell £1.99 cables, profit is profit, and profit is earnt! I hear your point though, but don't worry. Granted, there is next to nothing margin-wise on these devices, and what little there is would be eroded within one support call. Knowing a product is more than likely unsuited to our core audience for a list of reasons is commercial suicide. In my experience these Linx 10 are being sold as a laptop/netbook replacement and I just don't like that personally; e-readers and break out sessions would be the best use for these, but then what's wrong with a book.! We've focussed on building a tablet portfolio of suitable devices that we know have great wifi, more storage, quicker processors, superior build quality, better warranties, great ecosystem of peripherals, typical network deployment structures, consistent supply, and so on and so forth; devices that we know work, are fit for purpose and we can support properly. Just because something is cheap doesn't mean it's good, and certainly doesn't mean you should be seduced into creating a need for it as that's just waste, right? In the end you'll buy twice when it breaks or becomes quickly obsolete, or isn't in the end suitable for the requirement and that drives me nuts given the budgets you guys work to. Every penny counts, and my advice is not to put your pennies near the Linx but that's my own personal opinion. I don't like these things, refuse to sell them, do my utmost to dissuade my customers from even looking at them and won't be swayed really. I'm a massive fan of transitioning to Windows tablets though and see great potential in touch enabled Windows 8.1 and definitely Windows 10 devices, but it's got to be on the right device. 1

10101010 Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 @witch Where did you source the rugged case, insight said there wasn't one available at the moment?
Bezza49 Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 OKidoki, let me rephrase. Linx tablets in schools? Two words; bobbins bobbins. And you can quote me on that LOL. Linx tablets at home though? You should never bash the competition, VeryPC Colin Plenty of our customers have bought the Linx and love it for what it does. Yes it is cheap, at £141.66 for the Pro Bundle, so you can expect a few failures. It is not a Surface tablet. But in terms of Value for Money - excellent device. And I'd say feedback from our customers has been around 95% positive, which is pretty good. I have no agenda as we sell all manner of alternatives, but in the interests of fairness I think it needed pointing out. 2
