localzuk Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Apple are always trying to push ahead with new connectors. Just look at the original iMac G3 - it was the first machine to use USB exclusively. Firewire - they were, as far as I can remember, the first to include it on their machines as a standard connector. The Lightning connector was another big change - it pre-empted the USB-C etc... So, their including just USB-C connector, and having you adapt things isn't such a big shock. It usually drives other box sellers to start including the things, meaning general availability of the peripherals will increase rapidly. As has been said though, most normal users simply don't plug much in any more? Want to print? AirPrint. Want to play music to speakers? AirPlay. Want to show something on your TV? AppleTV. Want to transfer files? Cloud. Ok, that's idealised but its what they expect users to do. Its not really a device for people who plug in a million and one devices. If you need to do that, you probably should be using a Mac Pro anyway...

abillybob Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Very pretty machine. I'd buy it because shiny if it was the right price. But over £1000 for a Core M, 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. Can't make it count, plus the fact my school have already bought me the MacBook Pro 15" with 750m GPU I can't find an excuse to spend this kind of money. If it was the same price as an iPad I'd probably think about it though!

They had an opportunity with this to build up an even bigger consumer base but for people with money sense. They could have charged this at around £500-700 and still made money. Apple are just greedy.
Quackers Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 I was really liking the look of the new Macbook until i found the Apple logo does not glow on the lid, i love lights so that part for me is really disappointing. I still might get one as they are impressive, but after finding out the Apple watch i had my eye on has a price tag of £899 the Macbook will have to wait until later in the year.

Though I totally agree, owning a Mac does at least give you a fresh experience rather than using Windows computers all day. Components are the same in a Mac as they are with any other laptop, the difference with a Mac is they are increasingly making it harder to upgrade them and swap out components yourself if anything goes wrong. The design of them is no doubt beautiful, this has been Apple's selling point for a while and one of the reasons they can charge such an extortionate amount of money. This is one of the reasons I believe buy them at home as they are a fashion statement and work well with home networks, I still see no reason to buy them in a school. So there are always pluses and minuses, though being a NM it's normally the Specifications that I look at and how future proof a machine is going to be, I think a lot of us look at the "practical" side rather than the "fashion" side that's why we have such a different opinion compared to others. When you look at the internals and there's no way you can make the price count up most of us will say No. I do have to admit though because it's so very shiny and pretty I would think about buying one and even spend over the odd's but to me this is a £500 laptop at the Max of it's value, I can't see a way to justify giving Apple another £500 just because "Apple". Sadly, people buy laptops based on style and not practicality - think of it this way, how many times have people asked us whether a laptop is any good, we tell them no, only to go and buy it anyway because it was pink or red etc...

I'm sure I have a reputation of being a complete apple fanboi in most peoples eyes here but this laptop uses a Core M. This is an ultra low power CPU. Low power CPUs are always more expensive that the regular CPUs which find their way into regular laptops and desktops. You can't look at the clock speed of this processor and say "Oh, it's only worth £500", you need to look at other systems with the same CPU, RAM and storage to decide on the value of it. An almost direct equivalent is this HP system: HP EliteBook Folio 1020 G1 Laptop - HP Store UK. It has a lower resolution screen but is otherwise pretty similar. £1400 Dell don't seem to have any laptops which use this CPU so you have to look at Hybrid systems instead. A Venue 11 Pro with that CPU, RAM and SSD is $1099 without a keyboard. The one worth having is $150 so $1249 The Dell Online Store: Build Your System The Lenovo Pro 3 is a grand. 13.3 inch Ultrabook Laptop: Lenovo YOGA 3 LaptopÂ| Lenovo UK It has a higher resolution screen but is otherwise similar. If you can find me a system with a Core M 5Y31, 8GB and a 256GB SSD for £500, I'll be seriously impressed.

Not the MacBook, at least that's how I read it!

Oh no I know Style sells, but what happened to Apple producing high quality hardware which 'just works', now it 'just works' if you buy a load of extra stuff because they couldn't make it 'just work' to begin with because it wouldn't look stylish enough. Despite the fact that having a massive adapter hanging off the side looks ridiculous.

abillybob Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 @Norphy fair point. Though I'm a user that prefers performance over power saving but that's just me. You must also bare in mind there are a lot of budget systems out there that run Atom processors which are very low powered and don't require much of a heatsink to cool themselves down, these processors are good enough to run Photoshop, Office Programs and the Internet so you won't be able to differentiate between the two (they'll still be able to do the same jobs & are both very power friendly) of which I can find A LOT of computers with this kind of spec for less than £500. Again it comes down to preference, I'm not just hating on Apple I wouldn't buy that HP or the other laptops you have listed because I personally think they're over priced for what they are. My whole point is that it's a lot of money to spend on what is essentially an Office workstation, my girlfriend has just bought a Lenovo Laptop for £169 and an SSD for £60 and the end result that could be produced between the MacBook and my Girlfriends is no different at all and the performance between the two machines won't be much different either when loading browsers or doing day to day tasks. I suppose it depends how much money is at your disposal and whether "luxury" in tech matters to you.

I regularly care about it - when my machine takes ages to run a complex task, or when I'm tasking it compiling stuff, or when I'm watching a HD stream in Flash that isn't optimised to use GFX processors, or when I'm rendering a video etc... Or when I play Minecraft. Whether their design is changing the industry is up for debate though. I'd say not really.

However if less practical and more stylish is where the industry is going then I am extremely disappointed.

Or when I play Minecraft. I genuinely have not cared for CPU speed in a long time. Since SSDs came out and operating systems started being designed more efficiently it really has not been a concern. I have the cheapest 2 year old macbook air here with (I think) and i3 processor in. Not once have I thought to myself it is slow. Everything is instant.

Well, I do know; it's very possible for someone that knows what they're doing to run OSX on an iPad, therefore it would be quite cost effective to pretty much "laptopise" an iPad and I'm sure it'd do quite well. However, because Apple's software folks sit somewhere between EA and Ubisoft for most inept, they'd rather work on a hardware platform instead. What's special about the batteries? They're just layered, standard batteries, nothing out of the ordinary. Layering them in that way though is pretty much asking for trouble unless there is something special about them. (Generally interested in that, not a dig!)
