lol, I run events, not sure why I do it but I do :) I built 15 tables and a load terrain.....I must be nuts. I use one of the training rooms from the technical training business I run to host gaming days. It is good fun!

Damn that sounds fun :D Nothing like that here lol

Looking at that shot its like the who's who of the gaming industry outside of GW. Prodos (rob) Tor gaming and Macrocosm(chris) Clockwork goblin (Chris Hale and Russ Charles) Slayer Gaming (Tom).

Its fun to beat em at their own games lol

@thepridster The army breakdowns help, but what I mean is...

Could I for example use your 11 Grey Knights in an army of Blood Angels? Or do Grey Knights go with Grey Knights, so on and so forth?

The best answer here is if your opponents ok with it aslong as you use your points cost to tell him what you have and say im bringing this you can officially bring whatever you want. This is an unbound list, in a normal list you would be expected to build a force that you would call your primary detacthment i.e. Blood angels detachment with grey knight allies. This usually means you follow the Force organisation chart when building your army of 1hq 2 troops for your primary and your secondary requires 1 hq and a troop choice. Then you can use any of the other types of units upto the max specified in the force organisation chart, usually 2 for HQ 6 for troops and 3 for heavy support fast attack and elite. Hope that makes sense.

I started painting my Wraithknight last night. Posted pictures on my Twitter feed, won't be able to continue until Sunday though as I will need a lot of blue ink....

Regarding Dark Eldar, they are the lightning fast glass cannon army. They can move very quickly across the board, have very powerful ranged shooting but only a few very fragile models who get more powerful as the game goes on. They make up for this by using Posion, Lance and Fleshbane weapons to "cheat" and circumvent the enemy's defences. :)

Astra Militarum (formerly Imperial Guard) can be played two ways. The first is an armoured company of a few squads of infantry in vehicles and a ton of heavy armour with crushing firepower. The second is an infantry horde of hundreds of models, drowning the enemy in weak lasgun fire and disposable bodies, with a few armoured units pummelling away at range to keep up the pressure on your enemy.

I figured out that with an Ork Horde Detachment, its possible to field more than 420 models in a single unit. Sure, I'd be taking them off with a shovel each go, but it'd look fantastic on the board! :D

I think tomorrow I'm going to head to Games Workshop and see about what I can get/do. I'm thinking I might just get a singular figure to start with, and use it as practice for painting and see if I enjoy it before I spend hundreds jumping in feet first :p

Standard Ork game, then?

I remember building up my 'nids and challenging our FLGS Manager, as playing against him (even though you were basically guaranteed to lose) was an unofficial right of passage for newbies. My army was kind of zergy. It was old 'nids, what do you expect? 'Nidzilla didn't work too good.

He out zerg'd me with Orks. Was sad day xD

I'm tempted to go with Blood Angels, I like how their coloured and I presumed for painting the figures you "have" to follow some painting scheme, I can't have a bright pink dreadnought :c

Like hell you can't. You can have yellow Blood Angels, red Space Maries and fluorescent pink Grey Knights if you like. There's no colour restrictions at all.

There are canonical armies (You'll find their colours in the Codex) such as typical Space Marine chapters, Hive Fleets (Tyranids), Kabals (Dark Eldar) etc. but you don't have to use them if you want. You just develop your own kabal/fleet/chapter/etc. GW refer to it as "Forging the narrative". You can make your own army and backstory, provided you don't screw up the rules.

It's generally frowned upon to do Space Marines (et al) colours that match other official armies, just because can confuse the opponent, it's seen as a bit of an underhanded tactic. But there's no reason you can't use your own colours. I've seen a Purple chapter of Chaos Space Marines that looked fantastic!

The only thing people don't usually do is screw with the canon too much. For example, Orks usually get painted green because lore says they're green.

Isn't there some special book that depicts how you must paint your units in relation to their division or something? I was watching youtube videos and people were going bonkers because someone painted some (very detailed) rust onto his Dreadnought since the Marines wouldn't let a brother sit in a rust bucket and were known for being pristine and clean and blahblahblah and then they told off another guy for painting the shoulder trims gold instead of yellow... I don't want to get shouted at, otherwise I'll be the one firing my guns :c

Paint what you want. Most of the old Space Marine legions have successor chapters anyway so give them a custom colour scheme, logo and name and use the Blood Angel rules. Sorted. :)

Also, why are you listening to YouTube comments? ;)

Whilst it often comes out better to pay attention to things - and they were right, there's no way in hell a typical Space Marine chapter would allow a Dreadnaught to rust. Having your undead soul applied into a dreadnaught is like, the highest honour for them - you can do whatever the hell you want.

Maybe you're a detachment that got sucked through a wormhole and is at the ass-end of the galaxy with no way to get back home?

Maybe you're outcasts, and your limited resources force you to use a 'Just get the job done' mentality. Function over form and all.

Again. Forge the narrative :)

Edit: Also, @LiamHaith, gief twitter link pls

I would also like "my" twitter link. I like seeing the painting levels of fellow EDU members... I have something to strive towards :p

Also, in regards to "forging the narrative" am I made to make a backstory or can I just show up and be like "Yo guys, I gots guns, wanna shoot each other?"

Excellent chat! yes i agree dont listen to the internet in general about 40k! There is quite a few people who get rather irate about 40k lore and 40k in general. Those sorts of people lose thier minds if you ally dark eldar with eldar summon daemons with spacemarines etc. While these things would make me frown a little you can do whatever you want its your army! Its always good to have a bit of a reasoning behind why your army is the way it is. So for instance spacemarines summoning deamons could be that they are turning traitor, or deldar and eldar working together could be that they've decided the enemy army is a bigger threat. The best thing about 40k for me is the varation and differences every person usually has with there army and fluff!

Dark Eldar and regular Eldar are actually Battle Brothers. Preservation of the species is important above all else to the Eldar, and the Dark Eldar are likely to just do it for the lulz, because they still get pain/slaves/etc from it.

@LiamHaith "Yo we got guns" is good enough, aye. If that's the fluff you want, go for it. But it does help to build up a proper story to them.

For example, I had Hive Fleet Vanguard, a fourth Hive Fleet (canonical ones are Behemoth, Kraken and Leviathan).. Vanguard were 'founded' when, after a Leviathan lost a battle for a world, the Hive Tyrant's link was severed with the Hive Queen and it was abandoned. Using all the ruined bodies of dead 'nids and their enemies, it created a new goop-pool and managed to evolve itself into a new Queen. The colour scheme I used (blue carapace, grey skin) was a reflection of the planet it was left to die on.

I also had The Kabal of Shattered Sky, an outcast group of Dark Eldar that had grown bored with Vect's reign and decided to 'go their own way'. They were banished from Commaragh, sworn to be Haemonculi's playthings if they returned. So they would often raid other Kabals and steal their stuff, and even picked up Drazhar, Mistress* of Blades along the way

* Drazhar canonically is male, but Drazhar itself is a title, not a name, so her lore was that she had actually fought with the 'original' Drazhar and managed to hold their ground, neither being able to get the upper hand. She fought so well he consider her his equal, passed on the title and went his own way. Custom Model + Matriarchal army = Need to twist the stories a bit

You'll forge your own lore naturally as you go along, either throwbacks to certain epic battles you've had, or just because you had an idea that sounded cool. You'll see. For now "We got guns!" is good enough.

@Garacesh Interesting, I mean, you may as well have been speaking Swahili, but interesting. :p

As far as lore goes, I've never been a lore man so I doubt I'll ever evolve out of that. I've never played a game for Lore, nor have I picked any of it up. 10 years of WoW taught me "I should kill things that let me kill them, and bring misery amongst other players who claim to be Pvpers" Also, there's an Orc guy who was the king of Orgrimmar and is also some powerful shaman.

I don't care for story, just content :p

It's funny when people complain that the Eldar would have to constantly look over their shoulder for Dark Eldar betrayal. But the Dark Eldar have to look over their own shoulder around other Dark Eldar anyway as backstabbing and murder is normal daily life in Commorragh. A city where messages are sent in sealed envelopes with poison and only the person intended to open it has the antidote (well, in most cases). :D

How do Chaos Daemons play? I just saw their models and I'm in love. But I don't want to be playing something overly difficult/really bad for a beginner. :D

After looking at all of the pieces some of the Chaos Daemons have to be put together... I think I'll pass on them. But they're so purty :c

Anything you didn't understand, I'll be happy to elaborate on.

Trust me, you may not care for lore now, but you'll end up with one. Even slightly. It starts subtly. You play a game and one of your models takes a nuke to the kisser and just walks it off. You paint a stripe or something on him to commemorate his valiant victory. Then the model becomes 'more important'. You remember the little details. Soon you're crafting entire battle squads that follow this units lead as he's proven himself many times over. Boom! Narrative.

Except it isn't. The antidote you have doesn't work, and it was actually an assassination.

Only that was a body double, the real Archon is now very annoyed and sends a "response" to your message. Of course, the assassination can't have worked if they are writing back, so it's a good job you were in a rival's territory when opening the package. Remotely. A black hole appears. You smile at the carnage.
