Definitely seems that way as with the recent stream showing the first 11th ed codex (Orks), they specifically say that the code you get with the book gives you access to "multiple updates / new additions over the year" in the 40k app. Would make sense if they just roll the rules into the Warhammer+ subscription but I expect separate subscriptions per army or perhaps a more expensive plan to gain access to codex info is what they're more likely to move towards sadly.

It's unlikely to be subscriptions per army, but rather when you buy the codex and input the code into the app, it 'unlocks' that army so you get all their info and then any further updates for them (e.g. new units/rules released). The only subscription per say would be for the app itself if you want to build more than one list, otherwise you don't need to subscribe.

Personally, I'd much rather they moved towards the Warlord model - one subscription for the app which unlocks EVERYTHING for all the armies! But there's no way GW would ever let it be that cheap!

As long as they don't start making minis out of plastic that's designed to denature after 36 months, then I think I'll have to stick to the painting and modelling side of the hobby and largely forget about the actual game. That way I can pursue a hobby with sensible pacing and value proposition.

That just means codex errata (of which their will be many, a fair amount of rules in 11th just don't work as written.. Drukhari Archon Shadowfield springs to mind) and balance changes. So you always have the most up-to-date codex for the army until they release a new one. A lot of WH+ people have been asking for all the rules included but nope, it only gets you access to more than one army list (the free version only gives you one list. One. Not one per army. Just one. You usually play Orks and fancy giving the Blood Angels you got in the Armageddon box a try? Gotta delete your Ork list first!). It's the reason I still buy codices but use third-party list builders.

The 40K app now lets you share your army list with your opponent though so you can see each other's army rules/stats/etc without buying their codex, which is nice.

Also, If anyone's been following the recent TTS40K drama, ForceOrg is now back on the Workshop (new ID 3753014527) so looks like meat's TTS40K's back on the menu!

After being away from the hobby for about 10 years my youngest boy decided he wants to start playing Warhammer 40k.

I sold all my models years ago so after buying the new starter set, which is excellent with the terrain included.

And after buying a Combat Patrol Blood Angels which he wants to play. And pr-ordering the new Orks codex and re-learning the new rules I'm now building and painting sets for him 😆

Seems as my wife said its more for me now !

But I'm really enjoying getting back into the hobby, it's something I didn't realised I was missing in my life.

I'm older (60 :() but a bit wiser and the fact a year ago Cryptic Cabin opened a store a minutes walk from my house with warhammer clubs it was inevitable !

Still expensive but unlike my younger self I can just about afford it !

Latest Space Marines codex looks interesting, some models now retired. Many which I used to own!

Marines in all their flavours have just had some rather striking buffs as of yesterday (the incoming points nerfs will hopefully balance things out, but we won't really know until the next MFM update) which has put many folk with other armies in a bit of a bad spot, so as much as I'm not super enthused about it, I can't deny that now is a damn good time to be picking up Marines for a newbie.

I admit that as a Drukhari/Tyranids player I'm not exactly overjoyed, as even our elite infantry is going to struggle to take enemy models off the table now (and, in the case of Drukhari, it's especially bad as the +1T makes us go from wounding on 3s to wounding on 4s, and with a lot of our stuff being T3 makes those S6 boltguns wound on 2s, neither of which sounds ideal), but hopefully they'll balance things out. Trying not to be doom and gloom about it.

Smaller forces of superhuman marines seems to be the aim.  Marines have always been more impressive in fiction than on the battlefield.

But levelling them up does bring into question the purpose of Custodes.  Do they get a similar bump and become a four-person force capable of single-handedly stopping a hive fleet?

I'm genuinely all for making your average 2k game have fewer models for some armies. It feels like everyone's been steadily growing more and more hordey over the last few years when really that should just be the playground of Tyranids, Imperial Guard, Orks, World Eaters (and maybe Drukhari since they die to a stiff breeze).

Even my 1,000 points intro "Here's baby's first 40K game" SM list has 39 models (Ok, one is a Dreadnought and one is a Rhino, but that's still 37 infantry) and CSM has 45 infantry! vs my 1k Orks at 52 infantry, 'nids at 33 infantry (ok that has an Exocrine and a Tyrannofex in there, so not like for like) or Drukhari at 40 infantry, it definitely feels like the space marines have significantly inflated beyond "elite strike team".

It'll all depend on the point drops. If your typical Marines & co list ends up losing 2-4 squads over the course of 2,000 points then it'll probably be fine - it just means Marine players will need to prioritise a little more. Do they shoot or do they action, do they head to an objective or do they screen, etc.  Since I doubt they're going to modify many other armies' statlines to compensate.

Interesting - but not surprising - to see GW moving the majority (if not the entirety?) of the 'first born' marines to Legends. I wonder how long they'll stay there before they get fully shelved? A couple of editions maybe? But maybe they'll stick around longer due to the extensive collections people have, as compared to some of the more unique models that have been 'legended' for other factions.

As someone who is keen to get a Space Marine army back up and running (sold my Iron Hands at the start of 10th), I'm very keen to see exactly how they're implementing the 'less is more' approach to marines. Fewer boxes definitely sounds preferable to having to drop £500 on an army again. And from the video they put up it's interesting to see what looks like Intercessors having the ability to shoot and action. I would expect to see similar ways to change 'either/or' choices into 'and' choices if they're going to reduce the number of units those armies have.

And as I'm planning on doing Blood Ravens, will be very interested to see if they copy the new Psychic stuff similar to the Ork codex. Will make running Librarians more interesting again, rather than just someone who has a special shooting attack.

I'd put good money on GW still expecting you to drop £500 on a Space Marine army once again.  They'll just put the prices up on them to make up for the shortfall in purchases.

Excited to see your Blood Ravens though.  It's way beyond time they got the recognition on the tabletop that four RTS games have given them in media.

I think the proxies list is a good start, saying "Model X doesn't have a datasheet any more, but we're sanctioning it being used as Model Y" is a great middleground to not make someone's collection half useless. Of course that implies they actually want to include Model Y in their lists, but there's only so much you can do

Now Marines just need to get rid of the bajillion 'same, but different' datasheets... Doodz, Doodz in Special Armour, Doodz in Special Armour but on a bike, Doodz with regular armour on a bike, Professor Dingus, Professor Dingus in Special Armour, Professor Dingus not in special armour but with a toilet brush, Professor Dingus with a Jetpack, etc etc etc etc

Agreed. No reason why they can't just have 'Captain' and then in wargear he can replace his armour with one of 5 different options to do the same thing as Captain in Phobos, Captain with a Jump Pack, Captain in Terminator, etc. etc.

GW are going to be sorely disappointed then 😛 thankfully I already have a large number of unbuilt boxes that I've bought already pending any price increase. The new Intercessors are possibly the only ones I'm looking at potentially buying again, but even then I don't know that they look exciting enough to shell out for (and especially not at 'official' prices!).

Main issue is going to be whether they keep the Librarius detachment (or similar) in place. If they do, we're good. If they don't? Blood Ravens won't get off the floor.

I expected it was a holdover from when changes just gave you new/different weapon profiles, but now you have things like detachments modifying keywords and stats, adding extra abilities, and changing who can or can't be your warlord, I think people would be more receptive to:

  • Lieutenant (45) [Leader: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I] [Ability α]
    • Phobos Armour [0pts]: Change Leader to [X, Y, Z], remove Ability  α, add [β]
    • Reiver Armour [0pts]: Change Leader to [1, 2, 3], remove Ability  α, add [γ]
    • Combi Weapon [50 pts]: Swap whatever for Combi-Weapon [Statline]

Especially with Marines allegedly going up in points to account for the new toughness, it doesn't make sense that you'd need 12 Lieutenants, 6 Ancients, 12 Captains, 12 Chaplains or 9 Librarians.

Completely agreed. However I don't expect that to be happening any time soon!

And it wasn't much after I posted this that they revealed the list of the Space Marine detachments. And no Librarius one. Sad times indeed. There's details to be looked over, but still, makes me refrain from getting my clippers out anytime soon at least.

That is a shame!

If you still feel the temptation to make them, there's a host of decent Blood Raven style components on Cults3d you can download and print yourself.  Shoulder pads, heads, weapons, icons ect.  Stuff to give the vanilla marines some real character

Yeah, holding out hope that the Librarians follow a similar thing to Ork Weirdboyz in terms of changes to how they work, which might make having a specific detachment for them slightly superfluous. But will have to wait and see.

Might end up just doing them as a modelling project if the rules don't seem particularly conducive as I don't have much else on currently apart from putting transfers on a bunch of Panzer IVs for my 2nd SS (which won't take more than a single evening once I get round to it!) for Bolt Action.

Not Warhammer-based, but miniature-based, at least.

I'm about to start a 1st Tech D&D campaign and have been getting some minis printed and painted for the characters and the odd encounter.

Here's the party and their first fight.
